Tailgate Support Cables

On a somewhat related note, my tailgate is extremely difficult to get to open. My wife can't get it to. I have to pull the handle, throw my weight into it, then it unlatches, and is real heavy on the way down- like DK5 was saying. Any ideas? More concerned with the opening. I'll try lubing to see if that helps drop it.

I was just gonna ask about that... Mine is exactly the same as your describing... I have to push forward on the gate towards the front of the truck then hear a click as I am pulling the latch.

mine is the same way...it's worn latches that cause it...look at the latch on the bed side and you will see a groove worn into by the latch form the tailgate from all the years of use.

good ones are hard to find...i'm just putting up with mine until i come across a good set

I actually fixed mine today. Some of the bolts had come a little loose, so some of the adjustments were off (inside the tailgate) 15 minutes of trial and error, and I got a good setting, where both release simply by pulling on the handle. You have to pull a little hard, but I don't have to push in on the tailgate anymore. Also, the two spots where the tailgate connects to the bedsides at the top were off a little, I adjusted those, too.

And a little WD-40 on the hinges worked wonders. Almost as good as a brand new tailgate!

Good job, however the WD40 will just attract dust and dry out. Use a good quality lubricant that will last and not attract dust.

thanks for the tip. I'll pick some up when I can- money's a bit of an issue right now, and I had a can of WD-40 lying around. I'll look into a can of the royal purple stuff you mentioned.

broken weld nut for tailgate cable

Dorman makes things called "Nut-Serts" that can be installed on blind holes,to give a threaded hole where one is needed, like the ones used on door side mirrors,etc..to install one you just drill a hole, insert the Nut-Sert,and tighten a grade 8 bolt into it,and it expands in the hole and locks securely into place..(looks just like a big pop rivet, but has threads in the center of it instead of a stem)..one of those might work to fix the broken weld nut on your tailgate cable..they come in a lot of sizes, biggest one is 3/8" I think..
