I while ago I went through trying to fix my tailgate problem so the window will go up and down.
I tested the motor and it works fine when connected to a battery with a short piece of wire.
I tripped the two safety latches with the tailgate open. Nothing worked when I hit the interior switch or with the key itself.
On the fourth attempt the tailgate went up using the interior switch. The key didn't work, and the interior switch would not roll it back down.
One problem may be is I don't know which wire (out of the two) positives is reverse and which is forward. I kept switching them back and forth.
I cannot figure out why the interior switch worked for a second, but then stopped, and why the key switch didn't work at all.

Another question: the ground for it is on the case itself like I was told. How is it grounded? Was there a wire on the case or is there something inside the case? I have had the motor for the window out for a few months so I forgot how it went...

Any info is greatly appreciated.

this may be a little off. but on mine i disconnected the factory harness. and ran my own wiring from the motor to a 3 way toggle on the dash, (up, off, down) b/c i was having the same issues so i bypassed all the factory crap and ran my own. but by doing this i also made it so it wouldnt open with the key.

If the motor grounds thru the case make sure that the tailgate has a good ground wire attached to it. It may be hunting a ground thru the hinges of the tailgate and not making good enough contact to work

This is what I plan on doing sometime this summer, since the wiring on mine seems to be the culprit of why it only works when it feels like it. Have any pictures or diagrams of how you did it? Thanks.

I had the same problem with my interior switch. I took the switch out of the dash and wiped off the dust and grime and it started working normally. If I recall correctly I believe I took the switch out of the bezel first. I do still have a problem with the key switch in the tailgate though. It would start to activate for just a second and the go dead again. Can't figure that one out.

Where abouts is the ground wire on the tailgate? I don't remember seeing one on mine, that may be a problem?

Anyone else?

what would make the window go up and down very slowly and weakly would that be a old motor or weak volts through the wire harness? i can still go up and down through the switch, i cant remeber how many years ago the key stoped working..?

Yep, old motor or weak volts:D Pull the motor and temporarily run a battery directly to it. Negative side to the body and with the positive side just touch the wire to one of the two male connections on the bottom. Does it run well? When you touch the wire to the other connector does it run in the opposite direction? Grab the gear with your bare hand. Does it easily tear the flesh off your hand?:haha::haha:

If the motor is fine then look to the wiring. Either check all the connections or replace all the wiring. Make sure the wire you get is at least the same guage wiring. I'm pretty sure the wires running all the way to the back are 10ga. While you are at it pull all the switches and clean them up and re-grease with dilectric grease. If they seem loose you may want to replace them.

Finally take the cable that runs from the motor to the window gear. Clean it out with your fave spray de-greaser, making sure you get out or let dry out the degreaser, and re-lube. I'd suggest using a motorcycle cable lube rather than trying to force wheel bearing grease in there.

Put it all back together and hope it works. Give yourself a beer if it works better than it did before:D:D

Maybe mine was missing. I can't see another wire for the ground. Only the two positives. Anyone have a picture? LOL this is stupid but I don't know what else to do.

sorry to jump in and change the topic up a bit, but i cant find the answer anywhere else...so here goes, my rear window wont go all the way up on the passenger side, it just goes up all crooked. any help would be greatly appreciated.

mine rolled down fine just not back up. so i just drove it all winter with the window down. damn that was cold. i just jumped wires to get it to go up. now i switched bodys and i think i broke the damn switch. sorry im no help. my truck was pretty confusing. worked fine then one day just stoped.

I had a similar problem. Have a freind go on the outside of your truck, and help that left side back into the track. Most likely it just wasn't lining up with the upper tracks.
