Aloha everyone,

I have been a long time lurker. I really enjoy all the info. and builds but my suburban is pretty basic and just a daily driver.

I have a 91 suburban with a rear tailgate. The safety switch is broken and the dealer says they don't make them anymore.

How do I bypass the rear tailgate safety switch? Its located on the passengers side.

From searching it seems like the K5 guys pig tail the up and down wires together. However, when I took off the switch it only has one white wire and the wire looks like it goes up into the roof.

I have been fooling around with it and when I take a screw driver and touch what is left of the contact area inside the switch to the body the lights in the cab come on?

Electric wiring is not my thing:(

Any suggestions?

The safety switch if memory serves me is on the drivers side inside the tailgate mounted to the gate latch. Just follow the wiring from the window motor back and you'll run into it. There should be 2 wires. I think you found the domelight switch for the tailgate. But basically you remove the switch and just splice the wires together to eliminate the switch.

I believe its different then the Blazer , because the only switch I can find is the one on the inside of the body on the passenger side. No switches in the tailgate. And it is only one white wire.

The switch was all corroded it was working before I took it off, but now it doesn't.

What I could tell from what was left of the switch is under the switch or wedge part that moves there is a copper prong that runs to the one white wire. There was also a metal rusted square piece next to the prong. And there was suppose to be a metal piece that went from the outside of the two screws that screw the switch to the body into the switch under the wedge piece and around the copper prong and square metal piece. My guess is this is the ground? But there is nothing left of the contact points.

No difference in blazer and burb safety switch location. I had a burb and it was in the same place as my current blazer. Its mounted to the latch so that when the latch is open it closes the switch denying you the right to close the window when the gate is down. The gate window motor actually has 2 wires going to it. IIRC one is tannish the other is blueish. And I think (without going out and tearing into mine) the blueish wire is the one that you need to splice together. I like I posted above, remove the access cover off the tailgate and trace your motor wires back from there and it should goto the latch on the side of the gate and that is where you'll find the safety switch. It's a major pita to get to so you'll really have to look down in there.

Yea, I didn't know why I thought the inside switch it connected to the tailgate window:doah:.

I got it working now.
