and burn it into the ground... i really am about to take all my friends advice and just put a carb on it..

So over the last month my 1987 K5 w/ a 350 thats TBI, loves to just completely die when i sit in traffic for about 10minutes.it will be idleing fine, then i hear it studder a lil and it just shuts off. It first started waiting in traffic one day, died, i pulled over, w/ the lil momentum i had and sat for about 20minutes because it wouldnt start. Started up again i had a valve tick and pulled into a parking lot. so i let it sit for another 10mins.. drive then park it. Come back 2hours later, drive it home in no traffic just fine, runs smooth, no tick. After it dies like this i have to wait about 20-30minutes before the engine will start again. Happened again tonight and i've about had it with this junk. Someone PLEASE give me any idea what could cause this?

UPDATES!!!
!
OK so the above problem is fixed.... but now a new problem developed. I am driving a long, truck runs smooth, i start to go thru a turn and not using the gas. The truck studders and dies for 1second so i floor it coming outta the turn to try to save the engine from dieing completely and it kicks back on and drives normally. Only does this on turns and not every turn. Second problem is the day after the stalling around turns started when i have the truck parked in a parking spot.. i put it in reverse it stalls out and dies. I have even kept the rpms up when putting it in reverse and still does it. Can someone give me an idea wtf could be wrong??

I had a pickup coil do that once to me with my TPI. I also had a coil go bad but it would just shut off like you turned the truck off and wouldn't start till you let it sit. They have a broken winding or somthing in the coil pack and when it gets to hot it expanse and causes them to die. Once they cool down the break in the coil touches again and runs fine till it gets to hot again.

I'll give you a carb and an intake for it OR you could check that your fuel pump is working, change the fuel filter if you have never done that and definitely test that coil. All are cheap fixes and TBI is worth having.

Have you considered doing a backpressure test on the exhaust? I've seen a few cars from the 80's with old Catalytic Converters do the same thing. It fills up with exhaust, chokes the motor until it dies. Runs fine again after a few minutes, hours, etc. Just like a clogged drain.

My 87 sub had a ignition module do that. Run fine one minute then die and would not crank. I popped the Dist cap and pulled it cleaned it real good and replaced it with new one and never had a problem again. Had a Chevy Mech say that was one of the problems with that year dist. I didnt question it as it did work and is still working

X2 on this. Had a 86 caprice that a piece inside the converter broke off and would plug the exhaust. Hit it with a hammer and it would run a few miles. That was the only tool I had in the car at the time.

Plugs, wires, cap and rotor, IAC mod, fuel filter/ pump, . This is the order I would start to look.

well i replaced my fuel filter a last month, and within the last 6months plugs/wire so ill replace the ignition module today and coil. Oh yeah i just have headers to 2ft of pipe to 40's so no cats for me. thanks guys

after work a new one is going in! then.. ill drive and pretend im in traffic see what happens. thanks guys!

Let us know. Then you will have to show the TBI some love with a fuel cleaner or something. Kind of like bringing it candy.............;)

Nothing like a little sweet SeaFoam treat.... :haha:

I'd really consider doing some testing on it as opposed to just throwing parts at it. When it dies, make sure your injectors are pulsing, test fuel pressure, etc.

i've had a similar problem w/ my '89. usually only happens during the hot summer months in stop & go traffic. the thing will just die where its stopped. while its dead it's like there is not even a battery in it. 15-20 minutes to cool off and its fine. i've traced and replaced a number of burnt wires. i'm thinking the headers are heat soaking the starter solenoid. maybe i'll have to check the coil too.

You figure it out yet?

I wonder if it could be a cracked rubber hose holding the fuel pump on... just a thought... I'm glad I still think from time to time... man I gotta get some sleep instead of being on ck5 all night... why do I keep putting three periods after every statement??? and three question marks... ah crap... :p:

put another ignition module on... and havent hit traffic yet so who knows lol i'd have to find a back road and act like im in traffic if i wanna test it.:doah:
