Please talk me out of this

Pros:
Can run ag diesel which is 2 something
run at any angle, no need for efi
plenty of power
Already have the crossmember

Cons:
300 more pounds
can't really rev quite as high

if what ur putting it in isnt a k5 or a short bed i would do it. id love to have a cummins if i had a longer wheelbase vehicle. but a short wheelbase like a k5 and all that weight doesnt go good together for offroad.

Its not worth the extra weight, save the Cummins engines for Towrigs.

Also the Ag Diesel thing is only good if the truck NEVER gets used on highway.

Yep, ag diesel is the same as onroad diesel with a different dye in it. And they can get snippy about it.
Even driving a tractor is iffy if someone wants to make a case. Probably get thrown out of court, but you are not drive on a highway with the wrong colored fuel.

I ordered some fuel for my farm one time, and they asked me if there was any chance the vehicle would be driven over the road.

I told them I doubted it, so they sent out the truck.

As he was filling my tank, he casually asked what I was going to put the fuel in. I told him to just follow that fuel line coming out of the tank.

After he walked around he corner and saw the 4000lb genset sitting on the ground, he allowed how it was unlikely it would be driving up and down the road........

Every bit of weight you add decreases overall off road performance.

Now the counterpoint to that, is in certain rigs you don't need the maximum off road performance. If I hung a cummins in Horton it would substantially diminish my capability, I am so hung up on keeping weight down that I won't even ever go big block.

When I cut my cab off I lost a ton of weight it was like wheeling a whole new rig.

You guys have alot more mud where you at than where I am, but even then I vote for a big block

Put the cost of the cummins swap into the big block, then it will be very much fun

If I can get what I want for the big block it's probably going to happen

If not, spare parts for the tow rig

Older thread, I know.

For a trail rig (OTHER than mud), I'd take a small block (preferably aluminum LSX or even a 4 cylinder for a buggy) any day over a big block or diesel.

For my tow rig, I wouldn't trade the 12V Cummins for virtually anything.

I had the efi bigblock in my k5,, broke lots of dana 60 parts,, much happier with e 350 vortec, and just had to make a get the right gear to make the small block work,

duramax for the pull rig,, but a pre duramax, a cummins is a good idea

Something to consider, around here if your caught with AG diesel in the tank while driving on the road its a huge fine, and it goes by the gallon.

That being said, I dont see the point of a 6bt on any trail or in any mudtruck, its far to heavy. A 4bt would be nifty on a trail probably, but Im not a fan of diesels at all. If I had to choose, looking at the cards your playing, I would say 454 or whatnot all the way.

If you plan on it taking the place of your center console , i could see a well tuned cummins working very good. Other than that, they are a good tow rig motor.

The 5.9L Cummins will fit in an older Chevy without firewall or radiator mods, if your center console was directed at the length of the motor.

Why do I keep considering this

My big block ran awful with the carb on the trails I ran

Paid $400 for that cummins, needs a rebuild and new timing gears that the KDP took out

I had the pump gear case tig welded back together though

What do you mean about it running awful? Misbehaving with the carb setup and extreme angles on the trails you run?

Yeah it was not wanting to run on the climbs, which is basically what a lot of what makes up wheeling in the south east

Then when it was running bad, the vacuum brakes werent working, and that gets scary on climbs

EFI and hydro...

I'm not big on Cummins in a wheeling GM rig, they weigh a fockton...
