The bias ply super swamper has the tire size I want, but I don't want to kill my 20+ mpg with low tire pressure. Can a bias ply be run at 35psi and what happens if I do?

Sure, there are lots of bias ply tires that can be run way beyond 35 psi.

Specifically which tire? Tire pressure also depends on the vehicle the tire is under.

You'll be running on the center of the tread only...and probably at a higher pressure than max recomended for the tire. My 39.5's are 30 psi cold MAX pressure, I run them at 20 rear 22 front...

You will have some mileage loss for sure. Bias ply have a higher rolling resistance than radials.

rustyK5 is right you will be wearing out the tire in the center of the tread faster if you over inflate them, so be care full.

I want to run the 39.5 swampers. Is it possible that my mileage will stay the same then, since I'll be significantly reducing my cruising rpm? I run 35" radials now.

You'll probably hurt for more gearing bad enough that you're lower rpm's wont make up for the fact that the motor is struggling and you need to mash the skinny pedal more.

39.5's are a 1/3 wider than 35's too. Thats gonna be a huge factor. Have you thought this out completely? Are ya running 1 tons? Stick or Auto? Just ask yourself, Do I really NEED 40in tires? I run 36 TSL radials at 42psi and get around 15mpg mixed driving with an sm465 and 3.73's.

If I was going to go bigger it would be 37's and thats probably it.

It'd be tuirning at 2260 rpm at 65 mph...I think you could realisticly still get 18 out of it. It would feel pretty slow though. I ran 4.56's with 39.5's and the identical engine, tranny and T-case (as you know, they're in your truck now) and it was good around town, but buzzy on the highway. With 4.10's it'd be OK on the highway, but slow around town.

In your shoes I wouldn't run anything more than a 37 x 12.5" radial if you want to retain fuel mileage and still have OK power.

i kind of figured it wouldn't hurt my power too much because i could just start using the first gear... i also think that the speed at which i'd be shifting would be a bit more ideal - right now i shift at 50 mph into top gear, which sux if i'm trying to get on a highway and going up a hill. with a larger tire, i'd still be able to be in 3rd gear and get up to highway speed.

on another note, i found that there's a 39.5 irok radial with a 16" wheel. so i could keep the road manners and tire pressure (thus, the fuel mileage by rpm). i was a bit concerned about using the irok because i think it's softer than the tsl - but when you compare the two situations, i think that i'd probably get similar tire life out of the radial irok as i would out of the bias ply tsl and yet i'd still get better mileage with the irok... thoughts?

The IROK's get good marks on here. Seen several people comment on theirs getting good mileage.

What do I know though...I run military tires and rotate every oil change...
