tap and die set

I ordered the biggest tap and die set(combo. standard and metric) that craftsman had on their web site. It is made by another company, but it works great and has every size I have needed so far. It was expensive, but it has a nice plastic case with a tray that sits inside to hold the metric sizes. The standard sizes sit in the bottom of the case. I don't have any complaints about these.

My Dad has that same set, and I have used it numerous times, most recently when I was repairing the broken bolt in my head. It works very well, and has the most common sizes.

Irwin Hanson and Vermont American make the best ones out there I have found. Not outrageously priced, but good quality ones.

Now with that, I recommend the 676TD. It doesn't have everything, but it has a lot. 76pc set with standard and metric in it. All lifetime warranty too. Lists at $263.45. So it is cheaper than the Craftsman set, and Lifetime Warranty. Last I checked the Craftsman ones are not warranty in any way.

I don't need the tap set, I have a crap load of taps, but I like the Gear Wrench ratcheting tap handle. I've been happy with their ratchet wrenches so I bet the tap handle is good too.

on a similar note, I've found Lisle tap sockets to be invaluable....

The tap handle is a great product. In its place... Number one complaint from folks about it, there is no lock. You have to physical switch the ratchet back and forth if you tap back and forth.

I don't know about you guys, but I tap in a few threads, and back out a few, and repeat. Kind of a pain with the ratcheting handle.

Those tap sockets are great. Another decent option a lot of guys like are the Adjustable Tap Sockets. Matco pn: ATS2

This is great info guys....I searched on here and didnt find any decent info about tap and die sets.....I am thinking about the hanson, vermont, or matco set and also tap sockets to go with it.

I ended up picking the the Irwin Hanson 26376 set for 160 shipped to my house! Cant beat that! everywhere else was at least 185

I've seen em... tho I'm sure they work pretty good and wouldn't mind having em, I REALLY like the Lisle's being sized exactly for the taps, and especially like the little O-ring retention gig....
