I've heard of this trick before but never done it myself, does it really work? I forgot to tap the breather hole on my 205 before installing it in the truck and don't want to pull in out or disassemble the tailshaft collar.

Grease on the tap will cath 95% of any chips. You coluld always pull the rear speedo housing off then tap it, you might need a new gasket if the old one rips taking it off.

I wonder if I pull the rear seal retainer and then the big bearing behind it, could I snake a magnet in there and catch the chips?

Or use a spiral tap, it draws the chip upward out of the hole rather than driving them down into the hole.

I've used the greased tap trick to install many heli-coils on small engine heads and my old air cooled VW's with no troubles with chips getting in the engine...if you stick a magnet to the tap that will help keep the chips from migrating where you dont want them too...I have found the magnets in things like cam and crank sensors and speed sensors are very strong for their size--I grab all the junk ones my friend replaces at his shop and cannibalize the magnets from them!..ones from a PC hard drive are very strong too..

Thanks for all the help! I ended up going with both grease and a magnet, seemed to work really good.

Thanks again!!
