TBI 454 into 1990 Blazer Q's

I've decided I'm not going FI with the 454. It appears to be way too much headache, and the limitations would frustrate me to no end.

It'll be Q-jet when it's finally installed. I've made an honest effort to learn myself up on all this FI/computer stuff, and have given it up as a bad job. I cannot get my head wrapped around anything more than the basic concepts.

I did not wake up one morning with gigabytes of EFI knowledge between my ears. Over the last 20 years, I've acquired my gigabytes of EFI knowledge.

I'm not posting to say, don't give up on EFI. Heck, I'm thinking it might be better to start learning EFI with a vehicle that had EFI from the factory to begin with. The first EFI vehicle I bought new off the showroom floor was an 86 Pontiac Grand Am. A few years later / 80,000+ miles of wear, I was learning EFI.:eek1:

I've only been doing EFI chip programming for about 5 years now. Before that I just kept the vehicle running EFI just like the day the EFI vehicle left the factory. I'll be the first to admit, swapping an EFI system into a non-efi vehicle is not the easy way to learn EFI.

I agree with dave. My first EFI vehicle was because it was the first year of EFI in that vehicle. A 1987 Chevy 1/2 ton short bed 2wd I bought brand new and learned EFI. Problem was I sold the truck with over 100k miles and NEVER had to repair anything EFI releated.

Now I have done EFI conversions using the same system as the 1987 Chevy on many peoples rigs and have taught them the basics and it's so easy!

If you read the sticky here in the Injection Section that is all you need to know to own and maintain an EFI car. If you read that your car would be the same as a carbed car.

Where the Injection Section get's complicated is talking about programming chips or doing something that has never been done. Something you will never have to learn unless you want too! Stock chips or buy one custom burned chip if you have made big aftermarket changes or decide you do not want this or that...

Hope that helps your decision. In the end an EFI vehicle is way better every time I turn the key! :D
 
I'm in the process of doing nearly the identical swap. Have you made any progress? As to the flywheel issue - does anyone know what fits the bbc (org. a sbc) to a 4l80e? By any chance does anyone know where to get a new one? My 454 is out of an 89' with a th400. Thanks
 
if progress means it's on an engine stand and I occasionally go look at it...then yes I have made progress. :haha:

I 'plan' to go through the BBC, and I 'plan' to have the rest of the drivetrain as I want it, then I 'plan' to add the 454 last.

I'm thinking it'll be next winter's project.

Your original flywheel will work with the 4L80E as the 400 and 4L80E share the same converter bolt pattern and spacing.
