My CUCV has a gas 350 with a 89 model serpentine belt set up(including the alt).About two weeks ago the alt went out on a trail ride and I replaced it with my spare. This weekend we went to haraln KY to ride and fri night the alt quit charging.I went Sat morning and got another one,put in on but it would only charge 12 volts.I took it back and they tested it and it showed 15 volts.

I know my gauge could be wrong but it wouldnt keep the battery charged either.

The alt I got was off a 95 model truck.I have done a little checking since I have gotten home and they list two different part #'s for the 89 and 95 model alt's.Does anybody know what the difference is???

I also used the painless alt plug for the late(er) GM's with the diode, but didnot use the diode.Could that be the problem with using the later alt???

On a related/unrelated note their was a very strong melting smell in the cabin about the time this was happenin but I havent been able to find any burnt wire's.

The engine has TBI unit with a AFI harness.Could the ECM be affecting the charging???

I think you have to run the adaptor plug or it will fry the alt. Thats what I've been told.
