been having problems with my tbi this last month or so. started running horrbile and it threw code 42. 42 calls for a faulty ignition module. So I took my old one out and swapped a new one in. Code went away and the truck ran better than ever for about 400 miles. 400 miles later, truck starts running like crap again and its throwin code 42 again. So I pull the module out and have it tested and it tested out fine. Slapped it back in and it ran good for about 5 minutes then back to crap. So I took it to a buddy's shop and they replaced the distributor. Truck runs great now but every now and then it throws code 42 and the check engine light comes back on. Truck continues to run great but the light will come on every now and then.plugs and wires relatively new and in great shape. any ideas to what is goin on?

I had the same thing happen to me and it turned out to be a broken wire at the clip for the module. Start moving some wires around and see if it affects it.

I bet you have either a bad ESC (Electronic Spark Control) module or dirty connection at the wiring connector. It is located on the passenger side of the TBI unit and has a plug with IIRC 4 wires on it. I had this same problem and just by disconnecting the wire plug and cleaning the contacts then hooking it back up my problem went away.

sounds like a loose connection somewhere to me too :)

I chased one around on my TPI setup for quite some time till I found a corroded wire in the little wire between the coil and the ignition module.

Sounds like it is either a bad connection or the ICM is overheating. I'd check all the connections, clean under the ICM and the ICM, and then put some new thermal grease under the ICM.

What the hell is an ICM?
