I know this has been discussed alot on here but I figured I'd bring it up again. I'm swapping my 700 to a 465 and I've read that it would be better to swap out the auto TBI chip for a manual TBI chip. Well I talked to the tech support at Hypertech about getting a new chip and after several minutes talking with them they told me that swapping out the chip probably wouldn't be a good idea. They told me that swapping the ECM would probably be the best way as the chip only controls the air/fuel mixture and nothing more. Hypertech stated that the chip would have no bearing on what transmission was in there (auto/manual) and getting a new manual TBI chip might be bad for the ECM I currently have in my K5. Thoughts? Has anybody swapped the chips w/o problems? ANy input would be appreciated

The guy has no idea what he's talking about. The TCC is in the chip burn not the ECM. The same ECM is used with both auto and manual trans. You are better off talking to Brian at TBIchips.com

x2 brian at www.tbichips.com and swaping 1 to other makes a big diffrence in the end. long story short yes get the chip. and brian will send you a chip less than hypertech and better program for your doller.

curious? i have a buddy w/90 sub w/4l80& an 84 w/sm465, ...4l80 bite the dirt he unplugged everything from tranny and just gathered it up,..put 84 sm465 in sub and it runs fine

Did the exact same thing on the same vehicle as you didn't change anything computer or chip related and it ran fine.

It should set error codes at least. There's a lot of differances in the chip that will not directly affect driving but will have idle issues, stalling etc... when I did this on an offroader I really noticed the stalling.

yeah that's basically what a few members that have done the same thing have told me. Said that my 89 will run fine but in certain situations it'll want to stall and might idle funny

I would swap everything over and drive it, see how it does first before, swapping anything else. I drove mine on and off road and never had any stalling or any issues for that matter.

How does the ECM monitor that lockup has happened?

I don't think ECM monitors lockup. Commands yes, but I don't know as it actually monitors engagement, at least on the "early" 700's.

Auto vs. manual chip is a WHOLE different animal. Timing, fueling, idle.

so would it be in my best interest to swap the chip? Is it going to make that big of a difference?
I would say yes. Big differance? Not sure, I can tell the differance in driving but lots of guys here say no. Keeping a VSS is a big help.

Vehicle Speed Sensor. They are in various spots, not sure if yours is in transmission or behind speedometer, maybe someone else knows.

'89 and prior were on the back of the speedometer.

'90+ is off the transmission (if 2WD) or transfercase.
