I've done some searching and reading up on Windstar installs. While reading I kept hearing about letting the TBI control the relay for the primary fan. How is this done? I tried to search, but came up empty. Anyone have any answers?

Im pretty sure the thread you read that on is about an aftermarket TBI system. I seen the same thing and got excited till I was told it was an aftermarket thing. So now I am going to go with the thermo switches and use them instead.

The stock tbi won't run fans. The thermostat switches are easy to run, mine came from autometer iirc. I run two different temps, one for the high side and one for the low side of the fans.

Look at the Echlin catalog. They've got a really good assortment (well, best I've found in one place) and description.

It's big, and I can't view it now, but the temp switches are in there. You want something with an "off" temp of over 195*.

Edit: They USED to list some of the temps at least. :(

The Echlin catalog doesn't show temp ranges from what I could tell. I searched some more and came up with a link off of another site. Here is the link in case someone else needs it.

I'm going to try the SW557 switch. makes on 212*/breaks on 203* It also has the 3/8-18 threads. If you type in the part# on the Autozone website, it will give you the price and availibility. Hope this helps anybody in the future.

1227747 87-92 TBI trucks has no provision for E fans. But 16197427 93-95 TBI trucks does.

Those are the ECM part numbers. '747 was the "common" early TBI truck ECM. Your truck will have the '747.

Pretty limited ECM, upgrading to a better one is normally not too tough, but Mark would know what all is involved, and I'm sure there are writeups.

ECM fan control makes life a whole lot easier, and a whole lot cleaner if you are already EFI.

ya marks got great upgrade info . and also look in the injection section here for efi info .

x2 on the computer control if you can for easy / clean setup.

and some on like newer ls engines can set temp on/off and even do 2 fan controls for 2 fan setup .

I'm running the EBL TBI from Dynamic EFI. If you are willing to pay for it when doing a conversion, I highly recommend it. It's based on a standard GM 7747 (same mounts and wiring) but has upgraded software internally plus new hardware for external interfaces so it's really easy to program and has a nice windows interface. It also does high speed datalog and can use wideband O2. Plus the owner is very knowledgeable (he programmed it all) and will help you out if you get stuck. Tons of other features I can't remember.

And it will control your electric fan.

It only has one control wire though, so I wired it to both fans. I'm finding the current draw is huge and I might not want it that way. I'm considering running one fan from the TBI and one from this:

The high temp range on that unit should keep it from kicking in until the other fan is falling behind.

is it a ground trigger from pcm like newer ls stuff ?

and thay do make higher rated relays over the comon 30 amp . i have seen them up to 70 amps. if you still want 1 control.

Yeah, pulls low to engage fan. I run that to two 75 amp relays, one for each fan.
