Come on, none of you guys will admit to pouring gas down a carb? Yeah, its shouldn't be neccesary w/TBI. What you should do is to cycle the fuel pump a few times, then try to start it. Also, as stated above, running an electric pump dry is a sure way to kill it.
On a carb'd rig, pouring a little gas down the carb can mean the difference between starting it and having a dead battery from cranking all day. It works quite well if done properly. I like to pour out of the vent spout to control the flow. Its also not a bad idea to have an extinguisher available.
