starting fluid is a lot more volitile, and will almost instantly turn into a flame ball, and that would have been it... besides which, you have to have the patience to keep the finger on the nozzle.

If he ran it dry tell him to check the fuel filter. coud have sucked some nasties off the bottom of the tank. That thing should've fired up without external coersion.

I dropped my carb on my battery one day. If you guys think that guy's stupid you should have seen the flames. Good thing it didn't damage my truck.

Come on, none of you guys will admit to pouring gas down a carb? Yeah, its shouldn't be neccesary w/TBI. What you should do is to cycle the fuel pump a few times, then try to start it. Also, as stated above, running an electric pump dry is a sure way to kill it.
On a carb'd rig, pouring a little gas down the carb can mean the difference between starting it and having a dead battery from cranking all day. It works quite well if done properly. I like to pour out of the vent spout to control the flow. Its also not a bad idea to have an extinguisher available.

The worst thing you can do with a carb fire is shut the hood and hope it will go away! If you ever puke through the carb and flames are shooting out and burning the best thing to do is not pump the throttle, but crank the engine. The engine vacuum will suck the flame into the intake and extinguish it. Now if the flames are engulfing the carb on the outside because the idiot poured fuel all over it, then you have a problem and need to grab the fire extinguisher.

Just to be fair....I had a problem with a carb on my 56 Crown Victoria (yellow w/ white interior).....used to pour gas down the carb all the time...til I caught it on fire......I threw my jacket on it to smother the flames.....after the fire was out, I found out it was my friends jacket.........it was an Autolite 4600 on a TBird 312....I replaced it with a Carter, which solved the problem.......I was also a Jr in HS at the time, so FI was only even Rarely seen on Corvettes.....looooooong time ago.......lol....JD
