So i finally got my exhaust hooked up and the blazer running good. The only thing is its running rich right now. Will a chip fix this? The heads are not stock and neither is the cam but it is computer friendly. Also, i had thought the PO had drained all the old oil but apparently not because I drained about 2+ gallons today :doah: Think I figured out the knock :D

So i guess the real question is: get a chip now?

If it was my vehicle, I'd hook up my data logging software and get a baseline on where the engine was running rich / lean. If the engine was running rich everywhere in the data log, I would adjust the Base Pulse Width. If the engine was running rich in some areas and lean in other areas, I'd adjust the areas that were rich / lean.

Send me a data log ... That would let me know if it's time for a chip or not?

I need to get a hold of a laptop with a working serial port. Or get a USB converter. Ill try to get some data logged this week.

42 will set when you disconnect the wire for setting timing. Clear the codes (disconnect battery) and make sure it stays gone.

Most people say it smells rich but most peoples noses are not good indicators. Without a cat it will smell rich especially in a garage. Log data or use an exhaust sniffer...

Ive got a cat on it. Im gonna try and get some data logged this weekend. Maybe I forgot to plug in the damn timing connector :doah: Ill go look right now.

:doah: :doah: :doah: :doah: :doah:

Man sometimes I need to just look at things before I post here. :doah: The damn connector was unplugged! Now my engine light is off again :D

Still seems to be running rich, but like I said ill try to get some data logged this weekend. Thanks for the help guys!

Ok so after just driving it home the check engine light came on again. Got a code 24 (VSS), dont have one hooked up. Code 42 and 45. So now Im confused about the 42 again. And now the 02 has picked up rich exhaust. So whats my first step?

Drove the blazer all week and the engine light never came back on. I know it is running rich though, still havent gotten hold of a laptop to log data though. The idle is a little low and jumpy as well. And I get black smoke after I rev the engine and the rpms start to drop again. Im thinking a lot of this has to do with the cam thats in this engine. I wish I could find a damn laptop with a serial port

What's the cam specs @.050?

Use starting fluid in short bursts anywhere there could be a vacuum leak. Be very careful as this is dangerous if the starting fluid finds a spark.

Put a vacuum gauge on the engine and tell us what it says... is it steady? any jumping/jerking/fluctuation at idle?

Forgot my vacuum gauge today but I did spray starting fluid around the manifold and found a couple vacuum leaks. One is the throttle body gasket, gotta pick one up tomorrow. The other was a cracked vacuum cap. I think after the leak is fixed I need to reset the IAC to set the idle because I havent done that at all yet. Also need to make sure my TV cable is properly adjusted. SES light came on today on the drive home but went off after a few seconds.
Going to check for codes tomorrow as well.

If you have never set the minimum air don't worry about it. Just get rid of the vacuum leaks, check and clear codes and see how it runs.

I know I'll kick myself later for asking this, but, what's a TV cable? Is it a cable news show for transvestites? :haha:

:haha::haha: Its for the 700r4 trans, sets the shift points. Kind of like a kick down but uses fluid pressure instead.

Oh, OK. That's what everyone calls the kickdown cable. What does TV stand for? Is that the correct term?
