I swapped into my 83, don't have the VSS hooked up, and have no complaints at all. I still might hook it up some day just to see, but it seems fine. Right now my harness doesn't even break out the VSS wire(s). If it were me, I'd at least build the harness with the VSS wire(s) accessible. You can decide if it's worth the trouble to hook it up later.
