Ok the motor that my buddy and I "slapped together" didn't work out so he pulled the TBI motor out of his 92 1500. He read up on the swap and the info he is getting says to locate the O2 sensor with in 12" of the head. He is installing his long tube headers and we didn't know if we could put it in the collector or not. I told him we should installed a 3 wire instead of a 1 wire and put it in the collector instead of one of the primaries. What do you guys think? Any other tips? BTW: I have heard of a 4 wire O2 sensor but I am not familiar with the difference.

i put mine in the collector because that was where the tbi header manufacturers were putting them. it's just a one wire. works ok. would probably be better with a 3 wire. besides if you put it in a primary tube then it is only reading the output of that cylinder, whereas if you put it in the collector you at least get one cylinder bank to read from.

my 95 burb has just one on the right bank down pipe before the Y

It's just not practical to mount it closer than the collector (with headers) and getting it closer isn't worth switching to manifolds. You've got the right idea. Just power the heater from the fuel pump relay and it should work out fine.

Running a single wire in the collector of my long tubes, and it goes closed loop no problem.

Even stock they dropped out of closed loop at idle often times.

Do what you want of course. I've got two Delco heated O2's sitting on my shelf for when this single wire dies, in anticipation of it not working with the long tubes, as comments stated. Not replacing it until then.
