I have been trying to get my tbi 383 running right ever since I put it together and have played around using winaldl to help figure stuff out. I was wondering how far I can push my timing because I know that the ecm is supposed to do it for you. I had it at 0 at first then pushed it up to 4 to try and fix a running to rich problem. I wasnt getting any knocks so I decided to push it up again to 8 and still no knocks? I have run it around pretty hard at 8 and its not knocking or pinging, how far should I go with this and will this mess anything up for the ecm?

It is not adviseable to run any advance since the ECM controls it.

I was told to go ahead and try 4* by Brian at tbichips.com so I gotta assume that its not going to hurt the engine. I know there are others on here running it advanced just not sure how much.

Yeah you can play with it, I think GM kept a bit of a margin for error. +/- 4* across the board on a stock engine may or may not induce knock. Of course, yours isn't stock. :)

The ECM DOES do timing for you, should have 20-some degrees at idle with the bypass wire hooked up. Not talking about anyone here, but just in case, some people are under the mistaken impression that the ECM will run as much timing as possible before knock, which is not true. Timing is "mapped", and that preprogrammed map temporarily changes only when the knock sensor starts retarding it.

You need to watch your knock counts while driving under various conditions, if TBI allows the knock sensor to work when winALDL is hooked up. You may not hear knock even though it is occurring.

Timing is all about how the engine is built as to what it wants, since you aren't stock, it's entirely possible that a base of 0* isn't what the motor wants. "Problem" with advancing base is that it's a "global" change, so while 2* at idle may not be an issue, at WOT climbing a hill, that 2* might be enough to start the engine knocking. Obviously if it runs better off the line with more timing, but starts knocking later on, either you've got too much timing up high, or the fueling is wrong.

Updates? How did you get on? How did you sort out your problem?

Well I havnt been driving it much lately because I just bought a house but the problem is still there. Its not a sensor problem because every one of them is new and double checked using winaldl. The only thing left that I think it could be is a vacuum leak but I cant find it:mad:.
