tcase identification help

I found a 4wd th400 today but it did not have the np208 like I was looking for. I was unable to tell if it was a 203 or a 205.

How do you tell them apart?

It was in a 1980 3/4 ton 4x4 truck. The shifter did not have any markings to indicate a 2hi or 4hi so that was no help. The shifter did have the same stamping on the knob that I have seen in rigs with 203's if thats any clue.

Is the tail shaft housing shorter on the 205 than the 203? I think it looked shorter than a 203 I saw the other day.

Got any pics of the two?

There should be an I.D. tag on the front that will tell you, right above the front output shaft.... /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

For an '80 model year, it will almost always be guaranteed to be the 205 gear driven case. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

That looks like the one. How rare is this? The guy wants $400 for the set. I have to pull em /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif And to make thigs worse, it is stuffed in his back yard behind a few other broke down rigs. If it is worth the effort I'll go get it.

The easiest way to tell a 203 from a 205 is that on the backside of a 203 there is a fill plug. While the 205 has got an access hole cover held on with three bolts. I've found this to be the fastest and easiest way, hope this helps and happy hunting.

The main thing to look for is the little round cover held on by 3 bolts in the middle of tthe NP205 case. The NP203 doesn't have this.

$400 for a TH400/NP205 with sdapter is a very good price. I'd jump on it if I were you. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

It had the round cover with the 3 bolts in it. I want to buy it but I will have to do some drive line work, yet again. I can get a th400/208 out of a running 82 3/4 ton tomorrow for $500. It is not the best price but finding the 400/208 combo in a running rig is not very easy. I don't want to piece one together since I am still a bit unclear on how to identify the correct 208.

I could do the 400/205 for just less than $500 if I don't have to do any work on the front drive line.

I guess I'll pull the 400/205 in a day or two.


If I don't use the 400/205, what could I get for it? Either selling it seperate or as a package? The guy who has it does not know and does not care what it is so he mightr be letting me steal it /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
