Ugh. 700r4 and np205. Guess i need to pull the tcase and put a new input seal in and an output seal on the 700r4. How big of a job is this and could there be any damage to the 205? Presuming the transmission has fluid how safe is this to drive right now? How much would a shop charge ya think? I dont have a transmission/tcase jack. But I could maybe rig an ATV lift to work possibly.

no seal for tranny side .

tcase be just fine with atf . later years got atf factory in the 205 .

but the auto dosnt like gear oil that bad stuff to auto .

some 205 had 2 seals so make sure . and also install them correctly .

no seal on tranny side? there isnt an output seal of some kind?

tcase fine with atf- but overflowing out of every orifice?

agree- auto doesnt like gear oil.

will definitely try and install them correctly. Ive watched a few youtube vids seems pretty easy.

okay to drive though?

Also, there is an adapter between the transmission and the transfer case, correct? I cannot think of the name of it.
Some people are saying to fix the seals on the adapter others say the output on trans input on tcase.
What is right?
" transfer case input shaft seal" is what needs replacing right?

the adaptor is the correct term for this part .

drain the fluid from the fill hole on tcase and run . if over full with atf it will push out the yoke seals .

this style tcase didn't use seal directly on input seal .

there is the front seal on adaptor to keep the fluid in the tranny side . and some have a second seal on tcase side of adaptor to keep oil on tcase side .

have to pull and verify .

also the 27spline 205 used a coupler sleave for tranny output shaft to tcase input shaft . there is a oring on them to keep fluid from pushing in from tranny also .

call offroad design for all your parts needs . they deal with lots of this stuff and will sell parts of just what you need over buying a whole reman kit .

well the shop across the street refused to do it. I even offered to help their mechanic. They dont have a transmission jack or anything though. a friend from church offered to help me with it, he is a mechanic and familiar with the trucks (has a 79 p/u i think). So we will have to shade tree it I guess. I have a covered carport to work under but its gravel. So I will probably have to buy a harbor freight special. Otherwise this job looks pretty easy. Is there anything else I could check on the 205 while its out? I will probably clean it up and paint it otherwise.

My np208 had the input seal go out, same issues. No the trans doesn't have an output seal.

I kept noticing my trans shifting bad and losing fluid. Filled up but no drips. Checked the tcase and it was wayyyy over filled.

While its out do every seal on the outside you can. Will just make it easier on you later.

with the trans jack it's pretty easy and sweetk30 laid out the seals pretty well.

Here is a shot of my TH350/NP205 adapter, you can see the two seals inside the adapter

and here is the HF tranny jack with the NP205 strapped on using a couple small 2x4's to support it.

Alright, that really puts it in perspective for me. I can figure things out if I can see them. Im just wondering if that HF jack will go high enough, how much lift did your truck have when you did this? I have 6" and 35's, Ive got a real strong and heavy table with real short metal legs that I might be able to put under there lol I dunno. Luckily my friend said he had a transmission jack and we are going to try and tackle this the middle of next week. Ill see if I can do all the seals while its out. I would love to set this up for electric speedo but thats beyond my ability I think. Thanks for the pictures!

Jack height won't be an issue. Just throw a sheet of plywood under it since you'll be on gravel.

^ Super useful post by sweetk30. I will be using it again shortly as I play musical transfer cases and swap out my fresh re-built spare 205 I acquired with the leaky one in my 78' K5 that needs some love. As stated earlier, all the NP205 parts you need are sold by ORD. Be careful if you go all out and remove the balancer shaft because it's very easy to destroy the shims when you re-install them. Fortunately ORD had a shim/spacer kit for sale... not so easy to find without cannibalizing another NP205.

I doubt I will have time to rebuild it right now. This will have to be a quick fix, or at least the quickest we can make it.
