The tranny in my 88 K5 went out and I need to rebuild it, I saw a TCI kit on Summit just wondering if anyone has any experience with these and have any thoughts on them? BTW, it's going behind a 454 bored over .030 with ported and polished 781 heads with roller rockers, port matched Weiand intake, XE268H cam and a Holley 750 carb if that makes any difference........

what tranny ?

dd use or off road only ?

few more bits of info would be best.

and i have used transtar full reman kits for years in my trannys i had done. and the guy that did them for me has used them for over 10+ years. then a noyoyo shift kit.

but i have no specifics on tci kits per say.

it's either a 400 or 700. If it's a 700, you might look into getting a full tranny that's been beefed up for the 454. Sounds like any regular 700 is going to have a tough time with the beast under the hood, or any loose nut behind the wheel :)

I have a TCI "maximizer" 700R4 behind my 454. Great Trans. Never skipped a beat. Originally had in in my 81 K20 sub w/6 inch lift 35's 4.10's. It would bark 2nd under the hammer no problem. Has taken quite a beating and has 100+k on it. It gets regular services. I've towed with it plenty as well as wheeled it. Not sure whats included in their rebuild kit you're getting, but they're complete trans has treated me better than I expected. I give it thumbs up:thumb:

Yea it's a 700r4 and it will mostly see sand dunes not a DD with that engine which gets about 2-3 mpgs right now (needs to be tuned) engine only has about 10 miles on it before the tranny died, I suspect the 2.73 gears (yes 2.73) and the 33s had something to do with it and a little foot action too.....

going to also need a BIG cooler and best to get one with a fan and auto on fan like b&m sells .

also a gauge kit to watch temps.

700r4 will prob need updated parts and mabye more if never been apart. also special tools to reman one for spring comp to undo lock rings.

and get rid of the 2.73 and 33" tires. thats killin the fun and life span of the tranny.

and if keeping 700r4 = built tranny. search around few good companys sell beefy 700r4 crate trannys.

I'm not doing the work myself taking it to a friend to do it and I'm definately getting a cooler, also getting rid of the 2.73s and replace them with 4.10s but money is an issue right now and I NEED to have it running by the 25th so I wont be able to afford a new built tranny before then........

TCI kits are just transtar kits with alto frictions, a shift kit, and TCI on the box . Lots of ebay sellers sell kits. Find one with Borg Warner High Energy frictions with the rebuild kit.
