tech tip of the day: turning a k5 into an oil tanker...

turned the rhinok5 into an oil tanker this weekend. so on saturday my church did this project called Sacred Space, and we had 50 groups of people go out into the city and serve the people. we partnered w/ a group who goes to 3 half-way-house communities in SE portland and did oil changes for people all day. we needed a way to transport oil, so here's the steps to making your k5 an oil tanker:

1. take off the lid.
2. throw down a drop cloth.
3. find some dude w/ a few drums of oil he's willing to give you.
4. put the drums on a pallet, and fork lift them into the back of your rig. if your seat is forward, the pallet will fit perfectly between the wheel wells (unless you're tRustyk5).
5. enjoy the ride and the funny looks.

nope. didn't really need to. they weren't full, so they were very bottom-heavy. they stayed put really well. i went a little easy, but didn't really take it slow or anything.

yeah, he brought them in a couple inches, so it's a bit skinnier thru there. maybe he'll post up a link to the thread about it... it's under the thread where he was talking about relocating his batteries to inside the floor behind the front seats. pretty cool deal.

Yeah, 4" per side...

Still room for a few 45 gallon barrel's if needed though.

Hey, cool. I tubbed mine too -- but on my sixpack, not my K5 -- to fit the 67" DRW axle =)) Looks like I did it the same way, cut up two sets of wheel wells and cut out the floor.

I think I did 3.5" on mine, each side, whatever two "stripes" of the floor ribbing is.

Anyway, hijack off, sorry Colby... but it's always good to see folks doing good deeds with their trucks!

Hey rene did you ever finish the new location for the battery? I remembered you moved it but thought you were also looking into a dual battery setup.

Tubbed mine too, But did full on custom tubbs out of some thick sheet metal.

In the top pic you can just see the corners of the two inset battery boxes I built (directly in front of the wheel tubs). The truck has been dual battery ever since I swapped the 6.2 in almost 4 years ago. I'll probably go with a pair of Gel cell batteries eventually, but right now I run a pair of 1000 CCA AC Delco batt's.

Cool, I bet with how heavy those suckers are and since you have two of them that helps out with weight distribution. Probably well over 100 pounds that you were able to move towards the rear.
