Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller...

Re: Dont\' Do It !!!!

I just read up on how this works and the BrakeSmart DEFINITELY looks like the way to go. It just makes more sense using brake system pressure to determine how hard the trailer brakes are applied instead of using the deceleration of the vehicle to determine it. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif Its a good thing I saw this cause I was not aware of it and would have been stuck buying a conventional type controller here pretty soon when I buy a trailer.

Re: Dont\' Do It !!!!

Sure beats a timed controller. God is that a stupid idea. I'm just glad there is better stuff on the market today. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Dont\' Do It !!!!

i dont know if it works better or not. if i towed for a living i would probably look into it more. the tekonsha is fine for me, and probably most people.

the deceleration algorithms and equipment are pretty good.

heres a question.

on ice/hydroplaning, or slick surface, if you lay on the brakes with a tekonsha, i would assume the trailer would brake minimally as the truck is decelerating minimally... correct?

with the brakesmart it would detect full brake pressure and lock up the trailer, right?

we dont get snow,or ice here, and im just thinking out loud.... and semi-devils advocate

Re: Dont\' Do It !!!!

Since it only works off of brake pressure, it seems that unless you slam on the truck brakes, you wont lock up the trailer, in other words if your easy on the truck brakes, youre being easy on the trailer brakes.

my thoughts exactly. i do wonder if that if the ABS goes off will the trailer pulse as well? it doesnt take much to lock brakes up on ice. obviously if you are driving/towing on ice everything is slow and smooth, but abs can be a B!tch on ice. added trailer weight wuold help with traction a bit. also if the truck loced up with slight pressure and ABS does not puls on the trailer i imagine there would not be enough pressure to lock up the trailer brakes. maybe im wrong as i have not towed in snow very much. i just may be when i get back home thuogh as i have to go to Idaho from eugene and then back to camp pendleton. could be a fun trip. i think the tandem dual tires may bog me a down a bit if i hit snow, but thats another post.

Re: Dont\' Do It !!!!

I assume the pressure sensor goes before the ABS system, so its reading true pressure from the MC, not pressure coming from the pump or accumulator or whatever the ABS system uses.

ordered the Brake Smart today. said it should ship in 4 to 6 weeks. i wont be home by then anyway, so no worries.

thanks all for the help. ill let ya know what i think of it when i get home.

Re: Dont\' Do It !!!!

Prodigy kicks butt, but I hear jordans are also very good.

I like prodigy- Simply because even with/without ABS, it tries to apply brakes based upon your acceleration. Think about it from a traction standpoint- if your trailer is gonna jack knife, and you hit the brakes, and you lock up your wheels in the front... the deceleration factor should try and keep your rig straight- (if adjusted properly).

however, with only a brake pedal sensor, you'd lock up everything, and the trailer could theoretically come around.

It could come around on both scinaro's, but reasonably speaking, it is a tad bit safer on a deceleration side.

At least.. thats what I think. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Re: Dont\' Do It !!!!

thanks for the input. i can see what you are saying. makes a little sense to me, but also makes me think more. i got a lot of good and bad input on the prodigy. i got almost all good input on brakesmart. as soon as it is off back order i will get it. then when i get back install it and let everybody know.

on a side not, i will be ordering my trailer in the next couple of days.... /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
