So a 2 day trip downstate with two dogs and all of our assorted crap is about the max we can jam into our XL7. We figured as much but oy, it was full.

Been thinking about eventually going up to a Suburban so I figure I'll start asking questions.

Basically thinking a diesel 4x4 Suburban. Would prefer a 3/4 ton and the newer the better but it'd be hard to pass up a good shape older one (like I did last spring:doah:).

Specs and such of the different ages?
Expected gas mileage of them?
Problems of the different ages?
Last year was '00 right?

I'm not completely unfamiliar with the IFS trucks but other than Big Ugly my experiences with the diesels has just been driving the 6.5's in box vans.

Is this a repost or did I dream that I answered this post before

No one touched the first post for a while so I made a second here hoping to garner some attention. Obviously no one noticed it until now.

99 was the last year. I want to say ppl were getting 15-20mpg out of the 90's generation 3/4 ton burb with the diesel when i was looking for one....but don't quote me on that. The diesel only came in the 3/4 ton. 92-94 was the "older" interior style, 95-99 was the newer style. LS was mainly cloth interiors, LT was mainly leather.

Good luck finding one with a decent amount of mileage on them. Yes, the motors can probably run a long time, but IFS with much more than 150k starts to needs lots of work. So i was learly of getting one over 80 or 100k on it. That leaves you with very few.....most ppl bought these to tow, and put tons of miles on them. Good luck!

Well, I just bought a diesel suburban. I got a 1997 with the 6.5 turbo, I bought it with 140,000 miles on it. LT, leather, 3rd row. I put a boost guage and a 3" downpipe to 4" exhaust with a muffler on it. go to www.streetriderscustoms.com/dieselsuburban.html to see pictures. I get 19/20 mpg with mixed highway and city driving. More city than highway usually. The best placed to get used to the 6.5s are www.thedieselplace.com and www.dieseltowingresource.com

Im on both those sites, and the most knowledgable people are there. A lo of suburban owners. Id get aquainted there with the problems and the gimmicks of the 6.5 before buying one and hating it in a month. I bought mine and I would never look back! If you have any specific questions, let me know!

My parents owned a 2wd 1996 that was badged as a 1500 even though it was 8 lug Sf rear and 4L80e. Had a 3.42 gear and my dad said he got 22-23 on the highway if he kept it around 70. Any faster and the mileage dropped significantly. He calculated it to get those numbers, I might have his fuel tables on the upstairs computer he saves every damn recipet and writes down the mileage then enters it into an excel spreadsheet. But his Jeep Liberty CRD 4 cylinder diesel doesn't get more than 1 or 2 miles per gallon better on the highway.

Wow, I expected those Diesel Liberty's to get much better than that.:eek1: Just doesn't seem worth the embarrassment of driving one if it's not gonna get that great of mileage.:haha:

It's our emissions crap. In Europe and Australia they get noticeably better mpg.

I dunno if our future holds a diesel Burbon. Probably a diesel K5 but not sure on the Burbon now.

Eh, recent decreases in SUV values have taken us from being ahead of the value of my wife's SUV to now almost two grand behind it compared to what we owe. Basically we can't sell it and even be even right now which precludes us doing that and getting a Burbon.

Meanwhile there's something about Suburbans up here that mean people have to neglect them to death but you can still find a decent K5 or two if you look. Besides, we have no kids so a K5 would be a bit more practical.

I would think the suburban would be the best diesel vehicle to find because in most cases they are used as kid haulers. A company or a hardworker would buy a pickup or a dually to use and abuse before they buy a suburban. Especially if your talking about and LT, leather and all the options. Most people wont buy one of those for a work truck.

You should try to find a 2 door tahoe with the 6.5 diesel in it.

Eh, played the half ton IFS game...really don't want to go back there.
