Tell me about tall deck big blocks

I think you're missing what I'm saying about the 8.1 crank being a 4.37" throw..

502 stock bore = 4.468
---------------- + .030 = 4.498"

newer 8100 crank 4.37" throw = 4.37" stroke right.........

bore x bore x stroke x 6.2832 = displacement for a V8

4.498 x 4.498 x 4.37 x 6.2832 = 555cid

these are 2 block casting #'s of 454 10.2" deck engines and years available
the 364776 casting # is the same as 427 tall but that was '74-76. and truck engines as far as I know...not pickups..but 2 and 3 ton GMC's like C60 and C70's... buses, gravel trucks of the same era.

There never was a factory tall deck 454 made. There is an aftermarket bowtie tall deck 454 block but it was never installed into a factory rig.

yellowK20: The 8.1 engine is not the same as a 454 so the crank will not interchange into the 502 block. To turn a 502 into a 540 you need to bore it .030" oversize and stroke it .250"

that casting # is an aftermarket bowtie block? though it was factory install. but the 366 has heads that are not condusive to makeing horsepower. keep the 366 crank, its nitrided steel. good crank. the rest is boatanchor.

Could you not bore and stroke the 366, then install some better BBC heads on it for a really stout engine?

IIrc the 8.1 has the same bore as a 454 just the longer stroke crank and coil pack igniton??? which means the crank should Interchange correct??? if not there are tons of after market stroker cranks out there My dad has a 540 in his Chevelle I'll ask him what exactly he did to get that combo

yes the 8.1 has a 4.250" piston bore same as any 454. But the stroke is 4.37" and what 4x4high is saying I think is that the engines are not of the same family design and won't interchange. I don't know if the mains are different sizes but probably balanced differently too.

A new 8.1L 496 is 4.250" bore 4.37" crank
a 454 stroked to 496 is 4.310" bore 4.25" crank.

Yes, exactly. Different family of engine, just like the LS1 isn't the same as an old 350.

That's Cool, I know they look just like the 454's (except for the little coil packs on the valve covers, I talked to my dad and he said he Bought his rotating assembly from speed-o-motive and after talking to him and you guys it would appear I have been proven wrong (I hate when that happens)
