Well i blew my 12 bolt out on the way home from leaving badlands about a month ago and iv been keeping a eye out on 14 bolts, i found a few for cheap but id have to regear and all that...i found this one for about 200 on craigslist but can talk him down, its a 78 one ton chevy 14 bolt, was told it has 4.56 gears and a "locker" im not too sure tho, its rusty but i can clean it up and has no brakes i was planing on doing a disk swap on it also, here some pics...can you guys tell me if its decent for the price and if it has a true locker, maybe a CUCV axle and is it a dually or single wheel drive axle?

Well down here you can get 14bff for around $75-100. Parts for these axles are fairly cheap. Make sure you read the numbers on the ring gear, i bought a 14b and the dude swore it had 4.10 and i trusted him (of course i only paid $50) but turns out it had 3.83. So check the numbers (should be last stamped numbers on ring gear, divide the 2 and u get ratio)....maybe i cant see but in the second pic, looks like a tooth is chipped???

before i buy it ill take a look at it, i just need to know if its a locker in there and a dually axle, ill check for chip teeth and stuff i think its just some rust build up

looks to me like a single wheel axle, check width, should be 67 1/2" IIRC?!? Duallies are about 5" longer.

Looks like a stock open carrier to me but I could be wrong.

I couldnt tell you on width but be aware you need to move spring perches for a 1/2 or 3/4ton frame. As far as that rust goes I'd watch out. Rust means wasnt in oil which leads to possibilities of dry bearings.

ok well id go though it all and put new bearings in the hubs when i do disk's i might go take a look at it sometime this week, any more opinions on the carrier? p.s thanks for all the help guys

IMHO, I would have a hard time giving him more than a $100-$125 for it. I got mine off of Craigslist a couple months ago for $150 and at first glance, it looks to be in better shape. I'm with the others too.....that looks like an open carrier.

I picked up a 14 bolt out of a 87 m1028 which has a detroit and doesnt look like yours. not sayin its not locked just dont look like mine. On another note, I wouldnt pay $50 for that 14 bolt. too much rust damage. Especially when they are a dime a dozen.

ok thanks i just need a new rear end to get my truck on the road and i need 4.56 gears and dont wanna pay to regear..just getting into college and dont have much money and hard to find a decent axle around here

On the locker not thats not too say there isnt a lockrite style lunchbox locker hiding in that stock carrier. Thats how mine is, stock carrier, stock side gears and just locker "discs" to replace the spiders.
