My temp gauge on my 1990 Jimmy went out on me. I replaced the sensor and the gauge now and still nothing. I get 12v at the gauge and a .01v reading on the 3rd terminal. Not sure if that helps. Any ideas on what else I check. When I disconnect the plug on the sender the check engine light comes on and runs different so I think its working. Any Ideas?

I do believe you have two sensors for temperature on that engine.

One sensor is for the computer and tells the fuel injection what temp the engine is and will adjust various parameters to optimize the engine.

The second sensor runs the gauge only and has no interaction with the computer.

I think you might be working with the wrong sensor. Given that when you disconnect it the check engine light comes on I have a feeling you are working with the EFI sensor.

The gauge sensor is usually a single wire sensor located on the side of the drivers side head, closer to the front of the truck right around the exhaust manifold. It should be the only sensor there.

Run through the troubleshooting steps mentioned above but make sure you are working with the correct sensor. :D
