my 86 k5 has idiot lights. while im rebuilding the motor i figured i would replace the sensors. i found the oil sensor behind the distributer and then a coolant sensor on the driver side head. but then there is also a sensor down low on the pass side of the block, that is hard to discribe but what kind of sensor is that? also where is the best place to get these sensors?

I thought that would be a knock sensor, but I also thought the first year for that knock sensor was 87. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to clarify.

Er, I've got an '86 Blazer and the bone-stock 350 is sitting on the garage floor. I just went to look at it and there is no sensor. Behind the smog pump there is the block coolant drain plug and the dipstick.

By the way, If you need the gauges, clock and/or instrument cluster PM me. I've got one I'll sell pretty cheap.

i ditched basically everything that was on the old motor and went with just a regular edlebrock 600cfm with HEI. any need for the knock sensor now?

i cant pm you, your not a member:(

i take it back the sensor im talking about isnt down low it is in the rear part of the pass head. so on the driver side where the coolant sensor, the pass side is the same location just near the back not the front.

still a knock sensor?

If it's in the head then it is not a knock sensor.

hmmm i wonder what it is then. on the driver side the sensor is just a single wire temp sensor, this sensor has a big rubber plug that goes over it.

Ive got a stock 305 in my 84 K5. Ive got those pressure sensors too. There is one on both sides of the block and one in the back. I disco'd the one on the drivers side block and it thru up an ENGINE light, so I put it back and just "T"d off of it with some brass fittings and put my Autometer gauge sensor there. Im guessing the one on the block is a LOW Oil pressure sensor, hence the warning light. Low pressure means low on oil. The one behind the dizzy is the for the pressure gauge, but its a bitch to try and T off of it there.

do you have actual gauges or idiot lights? the wire for the sensor on the pass side got burnt on my headers, but my low oil light still worked even after that happened so im thinking its not a sensor for the oil but it maybe i will double check when i get home from work

Ive got factory oil press. gauge, no idiots lights. The only light ive got is the ENgine Warning light, which I suspect is low oil pressure/level light and it may tie into other things. My motor is Carbd as well.

hmm i wonder if its different for factory mechanical gauges than for idiot lights. when i have low oil press my idiot light, lights up i dont have an actual engine light.

Sounds like the early knock sensor used with non TBI trucks that had an ECM for timing advance and usually had a feedback carb as well. Some of those knock sensors actually screwed into a threaded hole on the very end of the head also.

Yep, on the right track. See post #60 in the build thread in my sig.

If it's in the passenger side block down by the oil pan rail and just in front of the starter that is the knock sensor. It should have only one wire on it.
