I have a autometer mechanical temp sensor that I want to put in line with the radiator hose on my ls. Trying to decide which is better, top hose or bottom?

Can I ask why you want it in the radiator hose?
I would think that you would want the engine temp closer to the heat source, but I may be wrong.
I believe that the LS is reverse flow so the lower hose would be coolant out to the radiator.

I bought a set of gauges a while back and it came with this mechanical one. I didn't want to drill into the head so this is my other option. Some day ill probably switch to electronic then ill just use the stock location. Yup, Thermostat is on the lower hose on the ls.

What year & type engine ?..
If you have a small block pre-1987 there is two temp gauge sender ports, one on each head, for the OEM sending unit, they use the drivers side one that is closest to the #1 cylinder for the stock temp gauge..

You could use a thermostat housing that had a port for a ported vacuum switch to install the sensor there...

I have a 2002 5.3. I've seen people tap into the water pump, but that probe for the gauge seems too long

I guess that I didn't completely think through/ say what I was meaning.
You can't get a good temperature reading unless you get between the thermostat and the engine.
And the other radiator hose is going to read coolant coming back from the radiator.
I would think that in order to use a coolant line, it would have to be the flow going out to the heater.
If that is full time flow.

t-stat is in lower hose on ls engines.

and for your mech sender that is about only option is in hose with custom adaptor.

best to just swap to electric now and be done with it . and don't forget ls engines metric threads and in the head require stubby sender to not hit inside the head.

most all senders I see guys running on ls are electric via aftermarket or guy on ls1tech.com who modifys a gm sender for metric threads to hook up stock gauge.

I am not super up on flow patterns for ls coolent so I just know what I have posted up . . and the hot for heater core also comes off lower hose t-stat area . . its a 2 stage t-stat 1 low temp for heater core and 2nd for main engine flow.

I think ill have to check out a new electronic one to match my set. One question I have is if I use the stock location on the drivers side head would I still be able to run computer controlled fans?

Why not go to the passenger side head? Like the old sbc' there's a matching threaded hole in the passenger head that has a plug in it ..

post #142 page 8 of my 2 wheel burn link below is pic of autometer sensors on my 5.3 .

last time I needed autometer gauges there is a guy on ebay with about the best prices.
