Ok here is the deal. I have been planning for ahile now to make some drstic changes to my K5. More towards the direction of lots of tube, tapered F/R full cage etc, but have just been putting it off because we have been wheeling so much :waytogo:

I deploy for 6-8 months in May sometime so I have decided not to attempt these projects before then because chances are they won't get finished ad'll miss a few trips. Usually when I wheel its just me and a friend or sometimes the wife goes. Kids don't go anymore because my driving style exceeds the safety factor with no cage.

Now with deployment nearing and me trying to balance family time and wheeling trips we have a few big weekend trips planned for Mar/Apr that the wife and kids would come along for.

Here is what I am thinking. It wouldn't take too long to build a nice 4 or 6 point cage to cover the rear portion of my rig for the kids. I still run my factory half cab so i would just start the cage at the B-pillar and cover the rear portion. I have a couple rough plans for it. This should be quick and simple to do, and I figure since it would just be the rear portion it would be easily removed and it would be easy to sell to anybody else with a K5 for what I have into it easily. That way I have protection for the family for the next few months so they can wheel with me, won't dump a bunch of time/money/materials into a project I dont have time to finish, and somebody will get a good deal on a "bolt in" cage when I am done.

You may ask if I am going to build the rear portion why not just do the whole cab. Well my future plans include some boatsides, half cab removal, tapered skins, cage that integrates into the engine area and front bumper. It will be a slow process doing it all at once and easier to do one time instead of building this and then trying to modify and add on to it.

Comments? Questions? Opinions? :ears:

dunno what to say
sounds like a good solid plan
go with some good HREW and keep it simple

For reference here is my truck in its current form minus a little bit more damage from the last trip

My ideas for the future are like Horton, but with a windshield frame and a bit more of a tube half door built in.

With the forward portion tied into the front end. Not sure if I want the tube on the outside yet though..

The "temp" cage will just be something similar to the UAV from the B-pillar back.

yah you should be good. Just remember even though its temporary still needs to be built well if you think it needs extra support then put a bar in there.

Just don't roll it OK :D cause the cage will only be protecting the kids not you.

Maybe a way to tie it into the cab of the truck so it lends some support to the cab over your head if you roll

Yeah I plan to build it as well as I would if I were keeping it. I did think of maybe some way to tie it into the cab, but still make it removable for resale.

Why not just wait? You have been going this long without one. You may change your mind in design or somtehing since it happens alot when ideas are being tossed around. Just keep wheeling.

Well its mainly just to have something over the rear passenger area for the next couple trips since I'll have the boys along.

I don't imagine it will take long to put together, and the resale should be good.
