I was at the office the other day, and was talking to a buddy about my rear main seal issue :( Still not looking forward to fixing that one-piece seal, but you "gotta do what you gotta do" sometimes. This guy is a trans rebuilder, and says "I've got a 700R4 on the shelf, want it?"!!! So I say, how about we at least trade, and I could give him some money? "Naaa, it's just sitting there! Wait, want to upgrade to a 4L80E instead? I'll give it to you!"

I still wouldn't feel right just taking a free trans. But, it got me thinking, perhaps this would be something I should work out? I'm going to be searching, but had to post about this :) It's nice to work with such cool people. Just need to find out what exactly I would need. He mentioned I would need a throttle sensor & a speed sensor for it to work. I want to know too though if it's the same length as the 700R4, and if my current NP241 will bolt up to it. At least I've got some choices for when I fix the rear main.

How much $$$ should I give him for the trans? I figure at least like $300, if not $500, for the parts he might have put in it? He'll get my old 700R4 as a core too. Not that it's bad *yet*.

I'm getting stoked though :woot:

Well! After a bit of research this AM, I think I came to a decision!

I'll stick with the 700R4 for now. My buddy at work builds them super strong, with the added planet gear gearset & other items. I think, especially since I'm not towing or plan on towing anything big, it should be fine for me. Easier than converting to the 4L80E, with it's added length, and need for controlling mechanisms.

I have 36K miles with a mild BBC on my 700R4 and it's still doing great. It got a bunch of upgraded parts when we put it together and a temp gauge. I think you made the right choice, less hassle for a sraight swap.

If the trans is used, not rebuilt, i wouldn't pay much more than about $150. I just had mine rebuilt by a good rebuilder in Phoenix about 7 months ago, did a complete rebuild and upgrade of some internals, and cost me $850 with convertor and new TV cable.

Yeah the 4l80e would be nice, but too much more to do like changing the 241 to 32 spline, getting the parts and computer to control it and the added length.
Not worth it if not and a tow rig in my opinion.
