I have had this question since i got my truck and i was wondering if it is street legal to take the doors off of my 1986 K5 blazer,
i live in Texas :k5:

One mirror is all that's needed. . Never had a problem but it's always up to the officer whether he pulls you over or not

Im not sure how relevant the state actually is. I took the doors off my toyota once here in jersey and got pulled over in a matter of like 10 mins. The cop went on and on about crumple zones and how my truck was no longer crash rated w/o the doors and how jeeps were designed around this blah blah blah.

He wasn't a dick or anything just basically felt I was endangering myself, plus I had no mirrors which meant no leg to stand on. His advice to me was to go buy tube doors if I wanted to take the doors off my truck, or a jeep.

This is what the state inspector told me.

Texas seems to be laid back as far as laws for the K5 ever since Walker Texas Ranger drove one.
You don't need doors, just wipers, lights, signals, horn, windshield, rear view mirror.

I didn't think anything related to vehicle was illegal in Texas.

What?
Walker drove a GMT 400 and then the 94 dodge ram, when did he drive a K5?

I could be wrong.

It was a '78 GMC step side.

HAHA! Never seen that before. Terrible movie. Love how the jeeps don't stand a chance vs a K15...just the way it should be.

I remember seeing "Walker" driving a 70's Ramcharger with a blower too...on the early TV episodes ,not the movie..

My bad!!

It was a Ramcharger in "lone wolf mcquade" !!

He was still a Texas Ranger!! Thus the confusion, that and it
was '83, the zigzag man got a tattoo of me on his arm back then..

I was always told there needs to be a bar going across the opening so the occupant doesn't fall out. Basically a tube, from your upper hing to the striker. In my state, I know 2 mirrors for sure. Driver and one other, unless there's no rear window, then it has to be the passenger side mirror.

I see lots of people driving with no doors around Dallas.
Mostly new looking Heeps that still have showroom shine on the tires. I've seen a few pick ups on the interstate too.
That don't make it legal, i'm just saying I see it all the time.

When I got my "street legal" sticker I specifically asked the inspector about my 1/2 doors w/ no mirrors.
He said I don't even need doors, just a rear view mirror that can see 250ft behind me.

You should call or stop by your local inspection station and ask. :dunno:

Don't know what the "law" is here about driving with no doors, but I got pulled over within 15 minutes the day my '72 K5 was found with its doors stolen, and I drove it to a body shop to get the insurance claim started !..guess my hometown has cops that go strictly by the book--they followed me to the body shop, then said I should have had them tow it there if it was vandalized, and if I was caught driving it again without doors,I'd be written up..

I see a 90's Jeep Cherokee flying by my house several times a day with the doors off,no "safety bar" or other protection device to keep the occupants inside either..I suspect its "illegal" ,but the cops are probably too busy (or lazy ?) to bother pulling the owner over and writing him up for it..

I see vehicles with inspection stickers that expired YEARS ago still driving daily too,I guess they only pull ME over when mine expires..:dunno:..

I have been stopped twice while on my way to get a new sticker when the month ended before I could get there before..I wasn't cited, but had to stop at the police station to prove I got a new sticker on my way home..:surepal:..

Technically there has to be a specific section of the code stating you are required to have the doors or all body parts in place for this to be illegal. In reality any cop could pull you over and write a ticket for unsafe motor vehicle or something generic like that. Here in Ohio there is no specific law about doors and a single rearview mirror is the only specified requirement. I haven't had doors on my K5 for years and periodically drive it around home (two different smaller towns) and have never had an issue. In fact, just last week I drove it to the gas station and while filling up a State Patrol car pulled up to the pump right next to me to fill up and never even took a second glance.......my thoughts are that most cops should have more important things on their mind. There is also a guy in our off-road club that daily drives a Jeep Cherokee for years now and keeps the doors off 7-8 months solid a year. He drives around a bigger city and on the freeways, and the thing is painted flat black with dents and has a 6" lift and 35's, and has never had an issue.
