I blew the tranny on my 1987 Jimmy this weekend. I have a TH 350 behind a 5.7 TBI with a NP208 transfer case. I am emailing back and forth with Monster Transmissions as seen on Extreme 4X4.

What are the differences between a TH 350 with a 203 / 205 transfer case and a TH 350 with a 208 transfer case?

transmission doesn't change only the adapter and input spline count on the transfer case. a th350 has a 27spline output shaft. The t case needs to match that

Both will be 27 spline count tailshafts, the only difference is the length of the tailshaft. the 203 or 205 transmissions have a very short shaft, while the 208 requires one that is slightly longer.

this is the correct info.

but how do you know for sure you have a th350 in there now ? tbi would have had a 700r4.

unless its been swaped out and a fitz all kit with a 2wd tail shaft th350 installed. this would have kept the shafts the correct lengths.

and if thats the case you will need to tell them this so thay can get you the correct tail shaft.

take a pic of the tranny pan in there now and post it up for us. we can get you the right info. you dont want to pay for shipping 2x do you? or modify stuff to fit?

The 700R4 was swapped with a TH 350 to help with drive shaft angles. I had to lengthen the rear
drive shaft.

Yes 7" to be exact

Here is where I am at right now.

$1450 - B&M performance transmission, 1800 - 2000 rpm torque converter, oil cooler and the ATF delivered. They have a special until the end of October.

Monster Transmissions as seen on Extreme 4X4 is working on a quote.

Approximately $900 for a shop rebuild with torque converter.

None at local junk yards.

This transmission was only offered in 1981 so good luck on the junkyard find.
You should be able to find a cheaper rebuild you might need the rare output from your tranny if your case is damaged and needs replaced .

ask some buddies if they know a rebuilder or sweet talk one if you know one. I had a friend of one of my sales reps rebuild my TH350 with a stage 2 shift kit for under $300 :waytogo:

The pic is perfect. You have the adapter kit to use a 2wd TH350 in place of the 700r4 and keep the factory driveshafts. Any old 2wd TH350 should drop right in.

Summit sells remans for like $700 if I remember correctly.

If you decide to spend a little more you could put a 700r4 back in for a better (lower) first gear and overdrive.

This is good news. Are you absolutely certain?

Thank you everyone for your helpful responses. I am a Jeeper just entering the world of full sizes or the dark side according to some so I have things to learn. I love my Jimmy and won't be able to sleep until it is running again.

Do I need a 2wd transmission with a 6" tail shaft?
Is the 2wd transmission's tail housing removed and replaced with the adapter?
Is the rear oil seal part of the adapter?

I found a friend of a reliable friend that runs an auto auction who will do it for $350.

I am still interested in answers to these questions.
