TH 400.....creaper gear...who\'s got it?????

I'm in the process of rebuilding a TH400 for my dual t-case project....

My trany guy says I have the low first gear found in the 1 1/2 ton dump trucks...

Who else is running a lower first gear????
Does it help you at low speeds????
I'm wondering how that gear will work with my dual t-case set-up... /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif

Re: TH 400.....creaper gear...who\'s got it?????

I thought the only low ratio first gear was aftermarket? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Could it be that you have a bigger drum that accepts more clutches and he is mistaken about the ratio being different?

Inquiring minds want to know... (because I want one!! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif )

Re: TH 400.....creaper gear...who\'s got it?????

After-market...
Hummm maybe I got lucky again....

He said the gears are different...
He also is running them in his race car...and spent $300 for'em.. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif
so he has SEEN them before... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well, since the tranny builder said they may have come out of a 1 1/2 ton truck they are probably worn out. I don't offer this to just anybody but to help you (a fellow CK5'er) I'd be willing to trade you a good stock ratio set for yours. You know...to help you out. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: TH 400.....creaper gear...who\'s got it?????

A buddy of mine had an aftermarket low gear set in the th400 in his Jeep. I think it moved 1st gear from 2.48 to 2.75...or so. I'm not sure how big of a difference it really made and this guy was well known for throwing money into his vehicle whether it helped it or not.

There is also a chance you have the heavy duty straight cut gear set that was found in heavier vehicles like motorhomes, though I don't remember hearing anything about them being a lower ratio. Due a search for "TH475" and see what you come up with.

LOL.... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It was a ck5 member that sold me this trans.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: TH 400.....creaper gear...who\'s got it?????

*Assuming a stock 203/stock 205 Dual T-case set up with 5.13 gears in the axle

TH400 2.48 (stock) first gear = 100:1 crawl

TH400 2.75 (aftermarket) first gear = 111:1 crawl

$500 would be alot to spend for that. IMHO.

for $1,000 you can get a 3.1:1 WMS 203 range box. that would get you 154:1 crawl, which is much more bang for the buck and offers 1:1, 1.96:1, 3.1:1, and 6.076:1 selectability.

Re: TH 400.....creaper gear...who\'s got it?????

What would the crawl ratio be with a 3.00 first?
These guys have a planetary set with a 3.00 first and a 1.57 second for the low low price of $648 /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

You may be right!!!
He said they were straight-cut...

Thanks for the info... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: TH 400.....creaper gear...who\'s got it?????

The 475 straight cut gears people are talking about are the planetaries. I don't know of any OEM low first gear sets...

Re: TH 400.....creaper gear...who\'s got it?????

I have strait cut planetaries and lower gear sets in my Th400. I could tell a big difference.

Re: TH 400.....creaper gear...who\'s got it?????

I was just talking to my trans guy last night. He told me that only differences btwn the TH400 and the TH475 are the straight cut gears (same ratio), the short bolt-on yoke output shaft, and some but not all have a 6 clutch disc drum instead the the common 5 clutch disc drum.

Re: TH 400.....creaper gear...who\'s got it?????

Yep, that's my understanding (except I didn' t know about the 6 clutch drum). One other thing is that they often have a drum emergency brake on the tail shaft...

Re: TH 400.....creaper gear...who\'s got it?????

I think you should PM Z3PR on this one, get his opinion (ZZ502 crate engine) on this one! /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

LOL...What's wrong Mike???? /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif
Or are you just working on your "Post Whore" skills!!! /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif

Re: TH 400.....creaper gear...who\'s got it?????

That would be a fairly impressive first gear, but even the 700R4's 1-2 drop is fairly large, 3.00 to 1.57 would be almost laughable.
