On my th 400, I lightened the weights to get my full throttle upshifts above 4k. Now, 1-2 is at 4k and 2-3 is at 4600. I would like to get a little more out of the 1-2, but not gain much if any for the 2-3.

Also, this trans needs to be going pretty slow (too slow) to get a manual or detent 2-1 shift.

What do I need to do? I have a suspicion that this was behind a diesel, but dont know for sure.

manual valve body and call it a day

Kind of an all purpose rig, including a spare for the family car. If I wanted to make my wife have to shift gears, I would just put the 4 gear thats sitting on the shop floor in, and call it a day.

try i little lighter spring and see what happens....it's easy enough. but trying to get it on an exact rpm is asking alot....

The modulator also controls the upshift speeds and to some degree, when it will downshift at part throttle, when your not applying enough pedal to activate the detent solenoid....there used to be a kit you could buy that allowed you to vary the amount of vacuum going to the modulator ,so you could increase the rpms before an upshift, also make it shift firmer as well...they do sell modulators that have more adjustment range than stock ones do....

If your trany was from a diesel you might try swapping the whole govener out for one from a gas powered TH400,the weights and springs might both be different on diesels,so swapping just the springs may not be enough to get it shifting the way you want it too...

the govenor's are different for diesel's.....and the vacuum modulator does nothing at wide open throttle, that is what he is looking for...most vm's are adjustable with a small screwdriver......

Is your electronic kickdown working? Not only does this provide passing gear but also raises line pressure and extends the wide open throttle upshifts by several hundred rpm. There is usually a heavy and light spring on the stock governor, by playing with a lighter spring on the heavy side you may be able to balance the shifts slightly better. You can also trim more wieght off of this side. If the electronic kickdown is not working that is the very first place to start.

Kickdown is working.

You may want to opt for a shift kit that will allow you more control, the TransGo 400-2 kit will allow backshifts at any speed and should help balance the shift points as well. It is a pretty simple kit to install, more messy than difficult.
