From my other thread, I finally got my truck after months of waiting for it to be shipped. Now to the real news.. truck shows up, it will only go into reverse.. kind of, I add 3 quarts tranny fluid (I knew it leaked), it grabs reverse ok, no drive... back it through the parking lot and park it. Today I go out, add a quart of fluid at a time until I get it onto the dipstick, then run it through the gears, add, gears, add, gears... now it's reading at the top of the acceptable level, reverse is as tight as it ever was, drive, 2, 1 are pretty non-existant.. in manual 1st, it kind of has some drive, but very very little, nothing like before.

So in total, it was about 1.5 gallons low on fluid. it is a th350. kickdown cable is NOT hooked up (do I need to pull or push it a certain way to make forward gears like me?). Vacuum modulator line appears intact. Is it likely they killed the tranny? it had less than 1 mile extra on the odometer from when I dropped it off. What failures could cause a real strong reverse but no forward gears?

Thats wiered. All i can tell you is that mine did that too me and the tranny ended up being shot. I could drive around all day in reverse and it would feel like it went into drive but as soon as you give it gas you get nothing. I pulled it apart and there was no friction matireal left on most the clutch packs at all.

I have HEARD that a bad front pump can lead to fluid coming up out the pidstick tube. Id if the front pump was bad it shouldnt be able to drive at all should it?

I've never seen one puke out the tube, no.. I had one go bad on a supposed hi perf rebuild ( rebuild sat for a few years before car was ready) the car was up on stands ( my camaro ) and the wheels would turn backwards , but not forward.

just thinkin' out loud.

sounds like a smoked forward clutch. Id pull it the whole tranny and get another one, those trannies are easy to find.
