I haven't posted here yet to break the news but... I bought another k5. It's a 79, Cheyenne. Everything is good on it except for one thing. Something is up either with the shift linkage or something inside the tranny. Here is the problem, if you put the tranny in park or reverse it does not like to come down to drive, it's like sometimes it will fall right back into drive but sometimes it hits a brick wall and you can't move it down past reverse. Everything else below reverse shifts fine, the shifter will run up and down from 1-Neutral every time but if you go above neutral you have to try a few times before it will go back down below reverse. I hope I have explained this well enough. Has anyone ever had this problem, or have any ideas of what it might be. The tranny shifts flawlessly in drive when your driving it, it's just this one problem. Thanks guys.

Greg Ducato is the man here that will know what is the problem, and how to fix it..

My guess is inside under the pan,the "gear selector" rod and linkage with the ratchet pawl is probably messed up..maybe the pan got dented there at one time and someone just put another pan on it or some parts in that setup are worn,etc..here's a picture I got off google..

My best guess from your description is a misadjusted shift linkage.

Might be in the linkage in the steering colum by the sounds of it too--I'd try taking the shift linkage off at the colum,I think its just a hair pin clip, and block the tires so it cant roll, and try shifting it by hand from underneath at the transmission--if it goes through all the ranges no problem, its not an internal issuse..if not,the pan will have to come off,and the internal shifter parts inspected..

Good advice Robert. Do this and report back, if the trans linkage is still binding internally then either the linkage roller fell out of the tensioner that rides on the internal detents, or the swedged bullet at the end of the park rod failed and is getting hung up, or there is a burr on the manual valve, loose linkage nut etc etc. It will take eyes on the issue to confirm the problem.

Thanks, I will disconnect the linkage from the tranny and try shifting it and I'll let yall know.
