TH350..V/S,,,TH400...... Where\'s the beef ? What should I get ?

vote and tell me why....
1. will a th350 take the abuse that a th400 will? what are the weak point of each?

2. which one is cheaper to have built?

Re: TH350..V/S,,,TH400...... Where\'s the beef ? What should I get ?

TH350's can be built to take punishment.
1.Heavy Sprag/Roller Clutch
2.Shift kit is a must
A.Higher Line pressure in Trans,
B.Higher Heavier Shift Point's
3.A Big Cooler is a Must
4.Deeper Aluminum Pan
A.Hold's more oil [less heat build up]
B.Aluminum [dissapate's heat faster than steel/tin

Price wise, a 350 is cheaper to rebuild than a 400
[content's of kit and amount of piece's in kit]

Hope this help's /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Let's see, you can spend a bunch of money beefing up a Turbo 350 to be about as strong as a stock Turbo 400, or you could either use a stock Turbo 400 or a beefed Turbo 400 that will withstand a nuclear blast. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

more opinions? please ? /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif and also ideas on making a 2wd th400 swap to 4wd? whats it take?

Re: TH350..V/S,,,TH400...... Where\'s the beef ? What should I get ?

You can convert a 2WD 400 by swapping tail shafts and ditching the tail housing. Requires complete disassembly of the tranny.

I’ve been wrestling with the same question lately. TH400 or TH350. Seems to come down like this from what I know or have recently learned.

TH350:
Shorter and Lighter
Less parasitic power loss
Cheaper to build and more common
Can be built roughly equivalent to TH400 for reasonable $$$
Fewer output shaft differences (length)

TH400:
Brutally strong stock
Longer/Heavier
More parasitic power loss
Harder to find 4x4 versions.
Numerous output shaft differences
Only had 203 for 2 years, hard to find and $$$.
205 also somewhat hard to find
2 Different 205 versions.

ya i have heard that 350 built tough is as strong as a stock 400. that in mind, thinking i cant afford to have to build it twice /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif i better look for a th400. i have a line on a 400 with a short shaft and not sure tey if it'll work.

The Okie Boys run TH350's and Rockwells with 44's and rarely have tranny problems. Go with the more common TH350. I don't give a shiznit what anyone says - the TH350 can be abused. These guys in Oklahoma wheel EVERY WEEKEND on the toughest terrain around and rarely have problems. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: TH350..V/S,,,TH400...... Where\'s the beef ? What should I get ?

The TH400 has a bolt that holds the center support to the case, the TH350 is just held together by all snap rings.
You can also get lower gearsets for the 1st and 2nd gear in the Th400.

I guess my BBC must be comparable to a nuclear blast b/c i've been through that TH400 a couple times. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: TH350..V/S,,,TH400...... Where\'s the beef ? What should I get ?

Th400 is alot stronger. It takes alot to build a th350 to hold up the same. But it really depends on what you do with it. Rockcrawling, you arent going to be that hard on it as say drag racing, or mud pulls. I have had to get my th400 rebuilt in my firebird 3 times in the 4 years I have been racing. The first one held up 3 yrs, but the torque converter exploded taking out the tranny (200 hp shot of nitrous at launch kills converters /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) The second one was a bad build, and I lost 1st and 3rd in it. I am on my 3rd rebuild and hoping it will hold up, havent takin it to the track, but the short bursts down the street tell me it will hold up.

I'd go 400 all the way. I run all my trucks with the 400. Bombproof in most all cases.

Also a 2wd short tailshaft (4.5"-5" approx) will bolt up to a NP205. A 208 will require a shorter shaft, and a NP203 will require an even shorter shaft.

I myself am planning on going to a TH400/NP-205 in the future.

thanks, i'll have more questions after i read all these /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: TH350..V/S,,,TH400...... Where\'s the beef ? What should I get ?

Yeah I am pondering the same, but different question. I have a 700r4 / leaky rebuilt NP208 right now. I have a 400/205 and a sm465 sitting in the garage. Which one should I put in ? 400 or sm465?

Re: TH350..V/S,,,TH400...... Where\'s the beef ? What should I get ?

if it was me and i needed the crawl ration then put in the sm465, if its a DD that you dont really wanna work the clutch in stop and go traffic then go th400. Really up to you on that point, but we used to have a dually with the sm465 and it was a REALLY stiff clutch, my mom hadta more or less stand on it to get it to go down. Was rather humorous.
