On my TH475 my tailshaft sticks out beyond the case about an inch +/-.

It measures 4.5 inches from the splined end to where it disappears into the case wall/internals.

Dumb question:

What do I have, a short or a long tailshaft or what?

I also have a 27 spline NP205 (early model) that I want to bolt to the TH475.

I also have the adapter for the tranny/T-case mounting.

Question:

What else would I need to mate them?

Sounds like the 203 version tail shaft, but I am not sure.

To mate that 205 you will need a different tailshaft for your trans. You will also need to change the input shaft on the 205, but to do that the case will need to have the front bearing hole bored to a larger diameter. Lastly you will need the correct 400/205 adapter.

The output shaft on my 4WD TH400 that had the NP205 behind it (racetrack pattern) sticks out 4.5" from the back end of the case and has 2.75" of spline. It is factory with the standard early style TH400/NP205 adapter and the short 205 input shaft.

Hey, I'm disappointed no one has put the 'This thread is useless without pics' smilies :D :p: !!

Will this shaft work with my early model NP205?

Here are pics of the TH475 output shaft:

Mine stuck out a lot farther than that, I thought you were measuring from the flange where the adapter bolts on. Using the factory TH400/NP205 adapter, that output shaft will have to stick 2-1/4" past the bolt flange to get normal spline engagement with a LONG 32-spline 205 input gear.

I just remembered I'm supposed to get a shipping quote for you on mine, I'll take care of that tomorrow and sorry about the wait. I'm an absent minded bugger sometimes . . .

Clem, if I remember right, the shortest one fits the 203 cases.
The longest one fits the figure 8 pattern 205.
The middle one fits the round pattern 205.

Where can I get the proper 4X4 output shaft to mount my figure 8 pattern NP205 then?

Can I get a new aftermarket output shaft?

Or do I have to dig up a used one?

Any tranny business should be able to get what you need. I'd try 4xHeaven and see what they say.

I know some 2wd 400 tranny's have the same length output (short shaft) as the figure 8 pattern case you need. Only difference between the 2 and 4wd shafts is that the 2wd has the spirals for the speedo gear. 4wd shaft has full splines in place of the spirals. Either works fine with the correct 205.

Cool, I'll give them a holler.

I'm wondering why that shaft came in my tranny.

It's an R.V. tranny so I wonder if they put that shaft in there thinking it would work with my NP205.
