First I must apologize. I did not go through here and do my research. I know I've seen it around but it's been awhile.

I'm looking to stuff 4l80e parts into my th400... Has anyone done this? What parts do i need to order or kit? I have some part numbers but i don't know what year of kit i need.
Can i order a monster in a box kit and Still do the upgrade parts or would i even need to?
Any help with pics a build up or knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
I've googled and you tubed but figured I'd ask here so i could actually get some answers... Thank you big time in advance

need lot more info on parts mix/match you wana do . . . your real vauge at this point in no info givin .

and we do have a real good tranny guy here thet will prob chime in at some point.

Y think twice. I've never heard anything bad about the monster stuff.

Don't mean to be vague. New territory for me. As far as i know you can use parts of the 4l80e inside the400 same case just bigger stronger parts and more of them. Sprags and such.

Yes i do I'm working with him. I still Need to get good parts and do some research.
Don't have the money to Just drop it off.
Guess I'll just keep asking questions. Thanx for the info

I hear you......I dropped my (good/used) th400 off last weekend for an output swap and found broken case lugs, broken pressure plate and some smoked clutches. Had to go buy another th400 case and my tranny builder is the in the middle of rebuilding that one :doah:

The 4L80E low band is slightly wider and has more area around the lug points, the direct drum uses the same 32 element dogbone intermediate sprag as the early (pre 1973) passenger car and light truck 400. That is the sum total of 4L80E parts you can put in a 400 besides some planetary items from the earlier versions which are the same as a 400, no upgrade there.

Not trying to hijack, but my TH400 shifts extra hard , and I was wondering if there was something I could do to soften it up a little? Is there something that I could do to , say the valve body?

Nothing wrong with a firm shift if you ask me
LOL, yeah, but this thing shifts harder than any thing I have ever driven or ridden in , and I think it might be hard on parts .(?) If you guys think it will be OK, then I will just live with it. Everyone that rides in my truck get there neck snapped , and the first thing out of there mouths is "DAMN"!! LOL

My truck shifts hard enough with a stock 5.3 th400 and 33s that it barks the tires on the 2nd shift almost every time and sometimes on the 2-3 shift. I'm currently building another one to do the same thing, just have to make sure the sprag is up to it which is where 4l80 parts come into play.

the 4l80e the sprag and drum, as mentioned, are about the only parts worth swappingaside from the band. I'm using an early roller type drum from a th400 but it had a 16 element sprag factory so I'm using a 4l80e 34 element sprag for upgrade. If you don't have the roller style drum you have swap in a 4l80e drum and race as well to use the sprag..

Nice thank you. Mine shifts just like that with 454 4.56 and doubler attatched. That's the info i needed. Think I'll Go that way still.... But May still ck out the monster or some components similar

The next TH400 that I get built will have the 4l80 parts you all are mentioning ,and will be based on a REID RACING case . This will be when Iget a Magnum box.$$$$$$

That Reid racing case is awesome. I would love to build one but I'm too cheap for now.

Ill add that a 4l80 is basically a th400 with overdrive. The advantage to 4l80 parts is a cheap sprag upgrade as most 400s don't have a roller sprag and to use one you have to have a roller drum which 4l80s had factory. You can find them on eBay for $50 as opposed to $350+ for an aftermarket th400 drum. After learning how a th400 works I don't think I'd add a shift kit without a sprag upgrade.

I'll also add that I'm building these trannies myself in my shop. The th400 is probably the simplest auto tranny I've ever looked at which is why I like it.

I just found out that the accumilator spring has a spacer in it that really firms up the 1-2 shift . I will take out this ,and put another stock spring in and it should soften the shift . In this instance I don't need the trans to shift that hard ; everything else is stock.Just thought I'd add this.
