i bought one from summit for a th400 and after i put the tranny up in the truck i could not get tthe dip stick infor the life of me. ended up geting stuck 1/4 of the way in, and destroyed it getting it out. then i payed 55$ for a b&M braided line dipstick part# 22166 and it went in just perfect but it was way to short. there was no way of reaching it without burning my hand on the header. should i have put the dip stickin before putting the tranny in? anybody got a partnumber or a brand that works great? i tried looking for a oem on orielys online just found the universal one thats on the self.

IIRC, there are two styles of fitment to the tranny, one with an O-ring and one with the big gasket like an upside-down top hat.

Mixing the two is bad juju.

Past that, I seem to recall getting one once that SAID it was for a Chevy truck, but sure looked like it was for a BOP bolt pattern or something otherwise TOTALLY other. There's a lot of TH400's out there, so double-check the listing.

That's what mine had in it. Was that top hat looking gasket. I figured the boring style would work so I took it out. Good thing I still got it. You got a part number or link to the stick I need

Stop by your local GM Dealer, they will have what you need, and they are not expensive, even for the locking one :)

I just pulled a locking dipstick out of a 4L60E and cut it to length, bent it and made my own hash marks with a file and drilled 2 holes in it like they come for F and L (full and low) and its worked great. Also a good time to run the vent tube up to the dip stick, drill and tap it and vent it into the dip stick tube. So if it ever boils over it will just puke back into itself.

Edit. And to set the full marks and such, I just used my old dipstick, filled it till it was full hot, and then installed the new stuff and modified it to work.

if the tube housing has a grove for oring then the seal posted in the pic above wont work .

the oring style don't seal as good / fussy to to get to seal over the full 360* style rubber seal posted above in the pic.

also th350 and 700r4 have same length dip stick . just the tube body is different . direct swap to use newer locking 700r4 on a th350 .

I made one 1 time by cutting / welding the stick on them self to fit in a 400 so it had good easy to read marks .

thats a good idea on making a stick instead of buying new. i have the th400 oring stick still, just ruined the tube. how far is the dip stick suppose to stick out the bottom of the tube? would a o'ring tube and the gasket tube have the same length of the dip stick sticking out the bottom of the tube? so i got a good reference. then i could just buy the tube and make my own stick.
