Why did GM change to the short th400-np205 adapter after 85? Is the sort better then the tall? Did GM also change the crossmember? Did GM still use the support strut on the th400-np205s?

Could I use the cross memember from a 78 k5 with any th400-np205 adapter (short or tall)?

short adapters dont break like the tall. all trucks use the same one piece adapter mounts after 85. pre 85 is two footed mounts.

pre 85 used the flat crossmember with the large drop for 1/2 and 3/4 tons, while the 1 tons got a really flat crossmember. 85+ used pretty much the same "W" shaped crossmember with another "S" shaped one throw in. not sure what gets what. no crossmember difference for 1/2 to 1 tons.

no they are dependant on each other, cant be interchanged.

If you are looking to swap in a TH400/NP205 both are equal in strength IMO. The newer stuff had better anti rattle stock t-case shifters.
