What years had this combo and which trucks are the best ones to look for.
I about pissed myself yesterday when I was at the junk yard pulling a set of Warn hubs off a 74 K-20 when I looked under it to see if It had My dream tranny. Sure enough it was an SM465/NP203. Now all I need is a TH400 version 205. I know I can convert any 205 with the kit from ORD but I want to save some money.

1980 on the 3/4 and 1 tons.

1981 to 84 on the 1 tons only in order to be able to do the Doubler setup.

So from what Your saying My best bet would be to get a conversion kit from ORD. Hell the kit is only like $200. I'm getting the 465/203 for free /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif and I can also get any 205 I want for free also /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif. My buddie owns the local junk yard and always owes Me for doing favors for him.

What Wes means is the only NP205 that will work with a Doubler is the TH400 version because it has a 32 spline female input gear. Which is what you need to mate to a 203 range box. Or you have to convert another 205 to the 32 spline female input gear.

Well, if you don't have any luck locating the proper 205, then yes, it would cost the same, if not cheaper, to get the conversion kit. Just remember, the input bearing bore on the case housing will need to be enlarged to fit the 32 spline sized bearing. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

And no, I don't have any of these short input 32 spline 205's either. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

It sounds like hes saying only the 81-84 th400 version 205 will work for the doubler..... why is that? Is that because that is the only 205 that has the 32 spline input? so the 1980 th400 205 has a different spline count?

How come the doubler will only work with the 81-84?

Corey said it right there. 1 tons from '80 to '84 are the ones that use the "tall" adaptors which sit on the flat crossmembers. These are the highly desired t-cases to mate to the Doubler.

The '85 to '91 205 t-cases are a longer input shaft and use a 6 bolt round pattern adaptor. These are the "short" adaptors and sit on a double hump crossmember. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

so the 1980 th400 205 has a different spline count?

No, because the '80 years, the 205's were available in BOTH 3/4 AND 1 ton trucks. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
