I had notice that my shifter was getting sloppy, and hard to tell what gear it was in. I unhooked the linkage from the trans, and when you turn it all the way to 1st or park there is a fair amount of slop that must be inside the trans. I have never had a th400 apart, is the rooster bolted to the shaft, or what could be going on here?

the outer bracket that the shifter linkage attaches to, broke the end off on mine....I think the rooster is removable, if you drop the pan you can see whats going on easily, if any part of that needs replacement it isn't a big issue to do.

Another idea, if you take the pan down. Where the linkage enters the case, there is a cogged for a better word piece and a roller that slides on it. That is the positive feel you feel when you shift it. This roller is mounted horizontally on a basically spring steel and it is bolted with a 9/16in bolt to the case. Its hard to explain without a picture, but you will get it when you open it up. To make it a more positive shift, get another roller spring thing, cut the actually roller piece off, and bolt it on top of the roller spring thingy already on there. It makes it much better than stock. Wish I could post pictures cuz I have one from when I did mine, I had to take mine out for the ratchet shifter as it made it a wrist breaker when you slapped it forward, but it eliminates the column shifter from falling into the next lower gear in any situation.

the detents are all positive, it just feels like the rooster turns slightly on the shift shaft when you put pressure on it.

Thanks for the replies guys. When I get an open lift, I will run it in and pull the pan. Why couldnt it come loose a month ago, before I serviced the stupid thing.

Seems like something always try's to go wrong after you do something good for your truck. Lol. I hate that.
