the guy that does my tranny work says the torque converter is spitting out metal pieces and failing. so that goes through the tranny and just wrecks it.

heard from a friend he just wants to sell my a tranny. all i should need to do is. replace the torque converter and the pieces are in the pan and didnt go thought the tranny. so new torque converter, filter and some atf. flush the cooler lines and i will be good..

so is this right? thanks

are there chunks of metal in your pan or little sparkley flakes? I could be the pump going bad. does it make any noise? How is the trannie operating. If you suspect the guy isn't being straight up with you, go to a reputable shop and get another opinion

fyi have you ever seen a valve body all apart ? LOTS of places to trap metel shavings and fudge up stuff.

you can bandaid it but its going south quickly. all that junk isnt good in the system.

the no.1 killer to auto trans is heat.

then no.2 killer is dirt/junk

oh ya and pimpin my trans temp sheet i always post up. :woot:

TH 400s are pretty senstive to metal shavings and the such. If you have metal going through it you will probably need a rebuild

Is there such a thing as running a tranny "too cold"?

yes there is a point that to cold is no good also.

people that bypass the cooler/heater in the rad are not helping things.

if you live in the heat 90% time then fine. but the rest of us need to get the fluid warm.

and gm uses engine temp to turn on the lockup converter on 4l60- 4l80 . 140* is the temp for use.

so if you bypass that red cooler/heater the fluid will still be cold and not up to temp and the computer is running lockup when the fluid temp is not ready for it yet.

Any pieces of metal you find in the pan have went through the trans already regardless of where in the trans or convertor they originated from.

The converter may have lost some thrust bearings and this allows the turbin, pump and stator to thrash about and into one another.

The stator one way clutch may have gone south too.

All this crap can and will screw up the valving in the VB
The 400 has a cast iron VB as is a little more forgiving than say a 700R4

Get the sucker out and spread it out on the bench and see what has gone south.

You may be able to just wash the gear box out well and then reassemble with a few new parts.

A soft kit (seals and gaskets) or a kit with clutches would be great.

Install a good transgo shift kit and a converter and you will be set.

pans off. a lot of junk in there. will be out this am. back in later today thanks

Be sure to flush the cooler out real well and install an inline filter (tranny filter) in the return line to the gear box.

Even with a good flushing with solvent and air, the cooler will still retain a lot of crap that you don't need back in your tranny.

Most parts houses will carry some sort of inline tranny filter.

Good luck

700R is not a bad tranny if you start with a "K" case andc then build the crap out of it.

A 700R thats gonna be beat hard is a Bomb waiting to go boom unless you do some serious work inside the little beast.

13 vane pump
HD front sprag
Hd input drum with the Hard steel support ring over the splined hub
Extra clutches and colene steels in the 3-4 clutch
More clutches in the forward clutch if the drum has room.
HD 2-4 band with improved 2-4 servo
Use the beast sunshell or better
HD planet carriers
HD rear sprag

Transgo shift kit and a 700 LU lockup controler KIT (eliminates the need for electical wires to the tranny.

HD converter with a Kevlar clutch

This will get you a fairly good 700R even more can be done but this is bare bones to keep one alive that you plan on using even a little bit hard.
