I understand that the 4L80e replaced the TH400. What is the difference? In other words, can I replace my TH400 with the 4L80e? Is it a dirrect swap? Or is the 4L80e electronic and needs a computer?

It will bolt in like the 400 and IIRC same size, but the '80e is electronically controlled inless you use a manual valve body.

The case on the 4L80E is 1.5" longer than the TH400. Otherwise they have the same bolt pattern for the tcase adapter (6-hole).

Yes, the "E" in 4L80E means "electronic" so you will need a controller of some kind to make it work, or convert it to a manual valve body and shift it yourself. There are several sources for standalone boxes these days, a quick search in this forum will find you plenty of subject matter.

The standalone boxes are $$$ though, aren't they? What truck had the standalone controller? 89-91 3/4 burb and k30's? Somethign like that.

I think you will find a standalone controller out of a 91 truck with a 6.2 diesel. Rare as I understand it.
