Have not posted in a long time.
My 350/203 are in need of replacement. I found this combo for $250 which I believe is a good price, the guy said they are in good shape. Possible doubler some day.
So my question is what do I need to do with the drive shafts?

The Th400 is longer than the Th350. So the rear may need to be shortend and the front lengthend. The crossmember may need to be moved too.

What kind of shop would be able to modify the shafts? Any idea of the cost involved? The same guy has a 350/205, does that require drive shaft modification?

The TH400 is slightly longer than the TH350 BUT the 203 is alot longer than a 205 so driveshafts will need to be addressed no matter which way you go. There are a couple venders here who do driveshaft work or your local driveline shop can handle it for you. In your case the rear shaft is going to have to be retubed to make it longer and around here that runs about 125.00 for a retube and balance. The front shaft may not need anything done (it will be very close to the correct length IIRC).

I just realized you're in Lake Tahoe, High Angle Driveline http://highangledriveline.com/ in Paradise Ca. is who i would have do the shaft work for you and it wouldn't hurt to mention you're a CK5er since he does frequent this site from time to time.

How much difference is there in length between a 700/208 and a 400/205.

Depends which year 400/205.
After 85 GM went with the same length combo whatever it was so driveshafts will be the same length.
The earlier style th400 205 was shorter than the 700/208.

As for the Original poster, if you don't want to go to paradise, sacramento driveline is the same distance for you, I know they were charging $50 for those modifications a year ago.

So the figure 8 pattern TH400/205 adapter is shorter than the round TH400/205 adapter?

I've never had either so i have no idea.

You know I have to rethink this, I mixed up 465 adapters and th400 adapters.
The early th400 adapter mated a longer th400 shaft with a shorter 205 input, the newer had the oposite short th400 shaft to longer input, I think they are same or real close.
It;s been 3 years since I held either one so my memory is fading.

I was just looking at ORD's website and the early TH400 that was mated to a 205 has a 4" thick adapter and has a output shaft stick out length of 4.5". The later TH400 that was mated to a 208 has a 2.5" thick adapter and has a output shaft stick out length of 2.5"

The only unknown (to me anyways) is the stick out length of a TH400 that was mated to a round pattrern 205 and it's adapter thickness.

The later 205 and 208 have the same stick out, same adapter except the 205 has a provision for the shifter to bolt up to the adapter.
Some people run the 208 adapter because they can find it cheaper, especially when they are twin sticking it anyway.
:D
