Re: ***NEED CARNAGE PICS***and info

you got lucky

Have you ever seen the video of the crash tests where a truck gets t-boned and bursts into flames? I remember GM paying out big $$$ in a lawsuit where a guy died in a fire after a car hit his truck.

I'm not gonna stop driving my truck cause its got the tanks outside the frame. Its just a bad design.

That's bullshit. NBC got sued by GM for that TV show and GM won the lawsuit. They used an ignition device to force that explosion that caused the entire campaign.

I didn't get lucky. Things don't just explode on their own. I agree, its a crappy setup, but compared to having it inside the cab like the 67-72s, its a dream.

Looks here like youre wrong Timmy, I know you didnt think that was possible, but the truth hurts.

[/ QUOTE ]

Looks like you're shooting off at the mouth again, what a surprise. I already knew that everyone that owned one of these trucks before 1995 got a credit towards buying a new truck, but the general consensus that they blow up constantly was fueled by the NBC-led fireball TV show that started this entire thing.

I already agreed that it is a shitty design. Scared the crap out of me when I knew I got hit in the fuel tank when I got broad sided. First thing I did was get the hell out of my truck and run. I was scared it was going to blow up, too.

Looking back on it, as violent as the crash was, I'm surprised that there was no leakage, but there sure is a good size dent in the tank to prove it took a pretty good hit, and survived.

EDIT:

Quoted from your very own article.......

[ QUOTE ]
Cooney added that the number and size of the settlements did not mean that the C/K pickups were unsafe. Given the millions of C/Ks made, he said, "the vehicle has a tremendous safety record."

GM produced more than 9 million of the pickups from 1973 to 1987 with fuel tanks outside the frame. It then changed the design.

[/ QUOTE ]

It has also been proven that these trucks don't suffer any more fuel tank related fires than any other vehicle on the road based on statistics.

Seemingly stupid design? Sure. Resulted in a significant change in the number of deaths in serious accidents with these trucks? I really don't think so, but you may disagree.

Saddle bag gas tanks outside the frame on pickups. Fireball /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gifwaiting to happen.

[/ QUOTE ]

If you think so, you should have been with me when I was broadsided at 60 MPH. Not even a drop leaked. I still use the tank today. If she hadn't hit the tire as well, she would have hit the tank directly.

OK, we know your opinion now. Do you have anything to add to the topic of the original post? Or just info about your crash.

Re: ***NEED CARNAGE PICS***and info

Here is a shot of the rear driveline... wouldn't have been so bad except that I had already broken the front driveline.

Deiselburb, I got x s here

Re: ***NEED CARNAGE PICS***and info

Oh yes, I forgot about the flimsy front fenders that break apart when you cut them to fit larger tires. MY front fenders are about to break completely, all the mounts in the rear are almost completely broken, so is part of the brace on the fender. I will try to get pictures today.

Re: ***NEED CARNAGE PICS***and info

The first thing to break on my K5 was the Gov Lock rear diff in the 12 bolt. I later started breaking Dana 44 Shafts. In fact Steve, you were with me on most of the breaks. Other than that, I broke one 12 bolt ring gear when running 37" tires as well as broke a Lock Right - sheared the pins, when running my 38's in Disney. I don't have pictures of any of these breaks though!

My frame cracked at the steering box, so I called ORD for the repair kit. I haven't installed a brace kit yet.

Re: ***NEED CARNAGE PICS***and info

You just reminded me of all my interesting failures.

I scattered the ring and pinion in my 10 bolt rear. Then the pinion bearing in the 12 bolt that replaced it. Was fine for a long time and then got the 38s. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif Scattered the front end twice already in four trips, once for each side.

Now I'm gonna go 1 ton. Who knows what I'll break now. Maybe the front driveshaft. Maybe a 30 spline stub...who knows at this point.

Re: ***NEED CARNAGE PICS***and info

OK, no pics right now, but here goes:
2 sets of rearend gears, R&P grenaded
1 gov-pop
1 10-bolt front, tube broke out of center section /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif
1 tie rod
1 front driveshaft
1 rear driveshaft
1 TH400/NP208 adapter
1 NP208 front case half
1 set of NP208 guts
2 6.2L starters
32 glow plugs
2 alternators
2 totally rusty rockers
2 sets of cracked seat brackets
1 rusty floor pan
10 rear u-joints because my shaft was warped by the military guys beating the u-joints out, one let go at 70mph going down the interstate and the driveshaft beat the mufflers to death and punched a whole in the floor /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif, then I got a 1350 jointed shaft from 6 states
etc...etc...

Got to love the old money pit /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Re: ***NEED CARNAGE PICS***and info

I forgot, I'm on engine number four, although I'm not sure that number three counts, as it never left the garage with that one in it. So far, one set of rings worn out and one intake valve burned, two broken connecting rods in number two, still not sure on number three, haven't torn it down, and so far, so good on number four other than some valve seals.

Re: ***NEED CARNAGE PICS***and info

Thanks for the information and great pics. Just an FYI you might see some of this info in the future. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
