Between the search feature here at CK5 and a suggestion/question from a friend I solved a "rough idle in gear" problem.

I changed my intake gasket last weekend. Installed a new EGR valve while I was at it.

My first mistake was installing the plug wires on the distributor in counter-clockwise rotation. OOps. It took a picture of the distributor in my Helms manual after 1 1/2 hours of head scratching and a non-starting issue to figure that out.

After that was solved I got it running, set base timing and leak checked my gasket job. Any throttle input in park and the engine would rev up with a slight miss. Putting it in gear and driving, the engine almost stalled out and chugged(sometimes violently) along until 1200-1500 rpms. Smoothing out past 2000 rpms, but underpowered.

I rechecked plug wires, all vacuum lines and even capped off the egr solenoid. No joy. I spent a couple of hours of light reading here last night. Yes, driving the 8 miles to work 3 days in a row like that. On lunch break at work today I pulled the plugs one at a time. A coworker had asked me if I was sure I didn't swap a couple of plug wires. The #3 plug was fouled and smelled of gas. The other 7 were "normal" condition. A dead cylinder to be sure. So for the umteenth time I checked the plug wires. This time with the aid of DAYLIGHT.
Low and behold #7 and #3 were swapped. And walla all is well. It runs better and idles better than it ever did.

Thanks CK5
