The $1000 decision

$1000 could do a fair amount on one of my current vehicles.

But the way I've been doing it, lets say the same $1000 amount of money I had 3 years ago. I could have spent it on parts I needed for one truck... gone in a heartbeat, never to see $1 of it reclaimed. Instead, over the years, I've used any money I get to buy trucks for what I need, then re-sell or part out the rest. Usually, I look at an investment and think "The only way I'll buy it is if I can get all or most of my money back and still keep the part that I'm after".

Like an '83 K30 a guy had for sale or parts. He said $1100 without a motor or $1600 with. I looked at it and figured, I want the Dana 60. I could just go somewhere, spend $1100 and buy just a Dana 60 (cause thats what people want for them outright on average) or buy this whole truck for $1100, sell what I don't use and keep the 60. On that deal I got my $1100 back plus $300 and kept the Dana 60.

These trucks may not be as good of a deal. For each, the only part I'm after is the 454. Re-sale parts on the C20 with camper include the straight body and transmission, or I could throw a 350 in it and re-sell the truck for $1000 and keep the 454 and the camper. The '77 K20 I could keep the motor and sell the axles and tranny and T-case locally and get over half my money back and be into a running 454 for less than core price around here. The Crew Cab has the least amount of re-saleable parts if the body is as bad as he says.

Allan is you want more big blocks this year, how many do you have already that are rebuildable?

I sold all the cores that I had blown up... the 2nd old smoking one out of the Orange Blazer and the 454 from Moyie last spring that I ran in the Crew Cab and the GMC.

The only 454's I have right now are:

the one from the '77 I got from North Bend that needs a cam and cam bearings and I'm going to throw closed chamber heads on it and put it in the Stepside.

the one coming back out of the Stepside, that's getting a cam and bearings and going back into my Suburban where it came out of a year ago.

the one out of the '74 motorhome that's in the little crew cab and I'm not sure if it's staying in there or not.

the one in the '73 motorhome that's still in it and is going to go into the '87 utility bed plow truck.

I guess I also have the .060 over smoking one in the GMC now which is coming out, and I'm going to use the freshly bored .060 over block I have in the garage to put one back together for it.

Oh and theres the standard bore 454 shortblock I originally put in the GMC when I was 16... I want to go through that one and build it up as a towing motor to put into the little Crew Cab.

Then I need a core to use to build up a 496 stroker... I'm thinking I'll use the already .060 over block that's coming out of the GMC assuming the cylinder walls are ok.

I just want another vehicle. Plus, half the reason is also that I'm taking care of a bunch of deals over on that side of the state, and possibly towing something to Spokane for Dillon... so my solution: buy another truck while I'm over there and use it to haul my stuff and Dillon's stuff and come home.

Then go for the one with the camper... lol you could always use more campers in Allantown

That's what I was thinking. But sounds like it's the most worn out motor of them all.

My plan is to hitch a ride over to the west side of the state with Dillon's parents who are going to Bellingham on the 24th. Then get myself and my parts dropped off at the truck that I choose, buy it, use it to deliver the parts I was brining over and pick up the parts and stuff I'm getting, then drive it down to Don's house in Tacoma (who generousely volunteered a parking space for me). Then I hitch a ride to the airport, meet up with the Family and continue on our trip to the Philippines. 3 weeks later we return to the US, and everyone fly's on without me to Spokane while I hitch a ride from Seatac to Don's house, get in the truck, and drive back to Spokane.

March 17th is when we arrive back at Seatac. I'll be driving a truck across the state that I know nothing about, possibly towing something, trying to get back here so we can all go out to the ORV park on the 18th/19th.

you're the most hardcore chevy guy i know.

don't listen to the haters, don't ever stop buying trucks. you're stories are a joy to read, i wish i was your neighbor.

Me 2!

I would not mind having a neighbor with all those trucks either..I'd feel right at home!..:D ..

Gee Alan,no wonder I don't see many 454's or cab over slide in campers around here..they must all have been moved to WA!..

I'd love to have a cab-over camper, but everyone here wants 500 bucks for a rotted out leaky rats nest, and the few "freebies" I see are not much better.(one came apart in peices as I tried to move it,that I was offered!:doah: )...and none were the "cab-over" style..they are TOUGH to get rid of here too,the junkyards and scrapyards dont even want them at all,and are charging people to junk them now..Motorhomes are ever harder to dispose of..yet if you ask about one that appears abandoned, suddenly they are worth hundreds of dollars..:( wish you were closer!..

I've had to stay off craigslist lately..I've seen WAY too many diesel 4x4 trucks, backhoes for 500 bucks, and a hundred other things I'd love to own,but have no cash to buy them with..I should be selling off all the stuff I've accumulated, not looking for more!..must be a disease!..

Looks like the guys who voted none of the above have won. It's looking like I won't have the money to buy any of the 3... and maybe I should take the little that I do have saved up and get some of my "down motors" up and going again.

No new truck adventure for me this week. :(

3 motorhomes, 8 camp/travel trailers and 15 cabover pickup campers to be exact. Maybe more, I lost count.
i'd go for the crewcab then. doesnt sound like you need anymore vehicles right now tho.

Nah... I've done it before. Usually had to part out a truck to get the motor for free though.

So how'd you get that one?

traded my freebie basket case Honda for it. we're putting a 465 in the truck that this one came out of, along with a known good running 454. when the TH400 comes out, i get the TH400 core to go with it.

was "running" as of last week, but not very good. popping through the carb, timing was dead nuts. so im guessing a bad cam. i'll probably end up building it anyways.
